Araw ng Kagitingan: Honoring the Spirit of Filipino Bravery. 🇵🇭

Today, we commemorate Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor), a day that reminds us of the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism of our heroes during World War II. On this day, we look back at the historic Battle of Bataan, where Filipino and American soldiers stood strong despite overwhelming odds, limited resources, and harsh conditions.

Their bravery did not end on the battlefield. After the fall of Bataan came the tragic Bataan Death March, where thousands of soldiers endured unimaginable suffering. Yet even in the face of hardship, their strength and resilience became a symbol of true heroism.

As we remember their sacrifices, we also honor their legacy at places like the Mount Samat National Shrine, a powerful reminder of the price of freedom and the courage of those who came before us.

Let this day inspire us to carry forward their values—love for country, unity, and bravery in the face of challenges. Araw ng Kagitingan is not just about remembering history; it is about keeping the spirit of heroism alive in our everyday lives.

May we never forget. May we always honor. 🇵🇭

A Visit to the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine

One of the members of La Liga Historiadores, Shanice Suarez of History 3C, recently visited the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine, one of the most important historical landmarks in the Philippines. Located in Kawit, Cavite, the shrine is the ancestral home of Emilio Aguinaldo and the very place where Philippine independence was proclaimed on June 12, 1898.

"The power of the people is stronger than the people in power" - Wael Ghonim

Every year, Filipinos pause to remember one of the most defining moments in the nation’s history—the EDSA People Power Revolution of February 22–25, 1986. More than a political turning point, EDSA stands as a powerful symbol of peaceful resistance, civic unity, and democratic renewal.

Today, commemorating EDSA is not just about revisiting the past. It is about reflecting on the values that shaped the movement and asking how those ideals live on in our present time.

In 1986, millions of Filipinos gathered along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue—better known as EDSA—to protest the authoritarian rule of Ferdinand Marcos. What began as a call to protect military defectors soon grew into a nationwide movement demanding democratic reform.

Armed not with weapons but with prayers, rosaries, flowers, and courage, civilians stood before tanks and soldiers. Religious leaders, activists, students, professionals, and ordinary citizens united in a peaceful stand. After four historic days, Marcos fled the country, and Corazon Aquino assumed the presidency, restoring democratic institutions. The world watched in awe. EDSA became a global example of nonviolent revolution.

Commemorating EDSA today invites deeper reflection. Democracy continues to face challenges—disinformation, political polarization, economic inequality, and social unrest. The anniversary becomes not just a remembrance of victory but a reminder of responsibility.

As the Philippines moves forward, the legacy of the EDSA People Power Revolution remains a guiding light. It teaches that courage does not always roar—it can kneel in prayer, stand in solidarity, and speak peacefully yet firmly. Commemorating EDSA today means more than marking a date on the calendar. It means asking ourselves: Are we living up to the freedom won in 1986? Are we preserving democracy for the next generation?

The answers lie not only in history books—but in the everyday actions of the Filipino people.

"Home of Historical and Natural Treasures"📜🌾

Bago City proudly celebrated its 60th Charter Anniversary —a diamond milestone marking six decades since its official conversion into a city in 1966. Known as the “Home of Historical and Natural Treasures,” Bago stands as one of the most culturally rich and progressive cities in Negros Occidental, Philippines. This historic occasion is more than a commemoration of years—it is a celebration of identity, resilience, and shared aspirations.

Before becoming a city, Bago was a thriving municipality deeply rooted in agriculture, particularly sugarcane production—the lifeblood of Negros Occidental’s economy. Its elevation to cityhood on February 19, 1966, marked a turning point in local governance and development. Bago also holds a significant place in Philippine history. It played a role during the revolution against Spanish rule in the late 19th century and remains proud of its revolutionary heritage, closely associated with heroes from Negros.

Over the decades, Bago transformed from a largely agricultural town into a growing urban center while preserving its historical landmarks and natural attractions.

The 60th Charter Anniversary highlights Bago’s vibrant cultural identity. The city is widely known for the "The Babaylan Festival" celebrated every February 19. The festival features street dancing, colorful costumes, and festive music inspired by folklore and local traditions. Historic sites such as ancestral homes, century-old churches, and public plazas reflect the city’s Spanish-era influences and strong community spirit. These landmarks continue to attract visitors and serve as symbols of Bago’s enduring heritage.

As Bago City celebrates its 60th Charter Anniversary, it looks forward to a future built on opportunity, unity, and shared prosperity. The city continues to invest in youth development, digital transformation, climate resilience, and economic expansion. From its revolutionary roots to its modern achievements, Bago City’s journey reflects the determination and spirit of its people. The diamond celebration is not just a tribute to the past—it is a promise for the next generations.

Happy 60th Charter Anniversary, Bago City!
May your legacy of progress and pride continue to shine brightly for decades to come.
