June 24, 2026- ASCOT has reached a new milestone, earning its first-ever placement in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026โ€”the world's only global assessment that measures how higher education institutions advance sustainability through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Among 1,646 universities from 116 countries and territories, ASCOT was placed in the 1001โ€“1500 Global Band.

Notably, ASCOT received ratings in all six SDG categories it submitted:

Quality Education (SDG 4)
Gender Equality (SDG 5)
Life Below Water (SDG 14)
Life on Land (SDG 15)
Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16)
Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17)

Under the leadership of President Dr. Renato G. Reyes, ASCOT continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability, internationalization, and community-centered developmentโ€”contributing to global goals through local action.

Six SDGs. Six Global Ratings. One ASCOT making an impact.

Representing ASCOT were faculty-researchers Dr. Antonio Bolivar and Dr. Mark Raphael, Dean of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Dr. Bolivar highlighted opportunities in the blue economy and its potential contributions to food security, livelihoods, and sustainable development, while Dr. Raphael presented technologies used in ocean monitoring, including tools that help track fish migration, understand ocean conditions, and support fisheries management.

During the event, APECO President and CEO Atty. Gil G. Taway IV shared APECO's vision of positioning Aurora as the "Fishing Capital of the Pacific," citing the province's rich marine resources and strategic location near the Philippine Rise. He emphasized the potential of the blue economy to create jobs, strengthen coastal communities, and drive long-term economic growth.

In his message, ASCOT President Dr. Renato G. Reyes encouraged faculty members, researchers, and students to pursue research and innovation in blue economy, maritime security, ocean science, and related fields, emphasizing the role of higher education institutions in generating knowledge and developing solutions for sustainable resource management.

The activity was attended by representatives from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)- Aurora, Philippine National Police (PNP)- Aurora, AFP-Aurora, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-Aurora, Philippine Information Agency (PIA)- Aurora, Indigenous Peoples (IP) communities of Casiguran, as well as ASCOT faculty members and students.

BALER, Aurora โ€“ International students participating in the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) International Filipino Language and Culture Program and the Green and Global Philippines: Language, Culture, and Sustainability Program gained valuable insights into Aurora's cultural heritage and sustainability initiatives through a series of immersion activities facilitated by Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) on June 18โ€“19, 2026.

The delegation included students from Harvard University, the University of California Berkeley, and Northern Illinois University, who visited Aurora Province as part of their learning journey on Filipino language, culture, and sustainability.

Their Aurora immersion began with a courtesy call to ASCOT President Dr. Renato G. Reyes, where they were introduced to the province's rich biodiversity, ASCOT's academic and research initiatives, and the cultural significance of Aurora's Indigenous Peoples communities.

The students also participated in discussions on the Blue Economy, maritime security, and sustainable development, providing them with a broader understanding of the opportunities and challenges faced by coastal and rural communities. These sessions highlighted the interconnectedness of environmental stewardship, community development, and sustainable resource management.

Complementing the academic discussions were cultural immersion activities that allowed the students to engage directly with local communities and traditions. They were welcomed with traditional Filipino delicacies before visiting the Museo ng Egongot in Barangay Bayanihan, Maria Aurora.

Guided by members of the Egongot community and Municipal Tourism Officer Noel Dulay, the students learned about the tribe's history, customs, traditional attire, tools, and way of life. Several participants also had the opportunity to wear traditional Egongot garments, providing a deeper appreciation of the community's cultural identity and heritage.

The immersion continued with a hands-on suman-making demonstration led by Ms. Charito Bernardino and members of the Samahan ng mga Magsusuman ng Baler in partnership with Zha's Native Desserts. The students likewise explored the traditional craft of sabutan weaving through a learning session facilitated by the Calabuanan Weavers and Handicrafts Association headed by Ms. Myra Villaflor, where they gained insights into a local industry that reflects both cultural preservation and community livelihood.

Their visit concluded with a trip to Ermita Hill in Barangay Zabali, Baler, where they learned about the site's historical significance and its place in Aurora's local heritage.

Through these experiences, the international students gained a deeper understanding of how culture, heritage, sustainability, and community participation intersect in shaping the Province of Aurora's identity and development. The activity also provided opportunities for meaningful interaction between international learners and local communities, fostering greater appreciation of Philippine culture and sustainable practices.

The Aurora immersion was facilitated through the collaborative efforts of ASCOT's Aurora Studies Center, Socio-Cultural Affairs Office, and International, External, and Alumni Services Office as part of the students' educational itinerary in Aurora.

Accompanying the delegation were Mr. Joseph T. Gonzales, Director of the International, External, and Alumni Services Office; Ms. Melissa Grace P. Nacino, Director of the Student Affairs and Services Office; Mr. James Mathew Viernes, Head of the ASCOT Socio-Cultural Unit; and Mr. Emil Noveno of the School of Arts and Sciences.

What makes Food Technology students successful in baking laboratory classes?

A recent study by Dr. Mark Lester G. Cunanan, Assistant Professor I and Director of the ASCOT Food Innovation Center, explored the factors that influence students' baking performance and identified key elements that contribute to their success.

Published in The International Review of Multidisciplinary Research, the study found that Food Technology students generally perform well in baking activities, particularly in following procedures correctly and measuring ingredients accurately.

The research also emphasized the important role of instructors in the learning process. Teacher demonstrations, guidance, constructive feedback, and access to appropriate laboratory tools and materials were found to significantly improve students' performance and confidence in the kitchen.

These findings highlight the value of hands-on learning and quality instruction in developing the technical skills needed by future food professionals.

The study reflects ASCOT's continuing commitment to strengthening Food Technology education through practical learning experiences, research, and innovation that prepare students for the demands of the food industry.
