Aklan State University proudly congratulates AQUANONS, a student team from ASU, for being named among the Top 10 Teams in the School-Based Category of the 2026 AI Hackathon under AI Fest 2026.

Led by the Department of Science and Technology Region VI, AI Fest 2026 brings together students, educators, innovators, researchers, and industry leaders to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence. Anchored on the theme, “Building an AI-Ready Future, Together,” the festival promotes innovation, collaboration, and the responsible use of AI in developing solutions that address real-world challenges. One of its flagship activities, the AI Hackathon, provides a platform for young innovators to showcase ideas that can contribute to the region's technological and economic development.

Composed of Arnold R. Paghunasan, Daniel Joseph R. Orlina, Doreen Kay P. Lachica, Jade N. Salvador, and Lenard Angelo A. Olajay, the AQUANONS team secured their place in the Top 10 after their proposal was selected from a highly competitive pool of entries from across Western Visayas. Their concept stood out for its innovative approach and strong alignment with the goals of the competition.

The recognition advances AQUANONS to the next phase of the hackathon, where they will participate in orientation sessions and webinar workshops designed to further develop their project. Following these activities, the team will undergo the Semi-Final Screening for a chance to earn a spot among the Top 5 finalists who will advance to the live Development Sprint and Pitch in Iloilo City.

Their achievement reflects the dedication, teamwork, and creativity of ASU students in applying emerging technologies to address real-world challenges. It also embodies the University's vision of "The Innovative University for Sustainable Futures," highlighting ASU's commitment to nurturing future-ready innovators who can contribute meaningful solutions to society.

As AQUANONS prepares for the next round, the entire ASU community stands behind them with pride and support.

Congratulations, AQUANONS! Best of luck in the next round of the competition. Your ASU family is proud of you and cheering you on every step of the way.

The Western Visayas Consortium for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (WVCIEERD), in partnership with the Regional Research, Development, and Innovation Committee (RRDIC), is currently convening the Natural Fiber and Textile Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) Proposal Writeshop on June 24–25, 2026, at Aklan State University, Banga, Aklan.

The two-day writeshop aims to strengthen the region’s natural fiber and textile industry by developing high-quality, responsive, and implementation-ready project proposals aligned with the Western Visayas Regional Natural Fiber and Textile Innovation Agenda and Roadmap.

Specifically, the activity seeks to:
• Develop competitive R&D proposals for possible funding and support;
• Ensure that proposed initiatives are aligned with regional innovation priorities;
• Strengthen collaboration among representatives from WVCIEERD member institutions through joint planning and proposal development; and
• Advance programs that enhance the competitiveness, sustainability, and growth of the natural fiber and textile sector.

Natural fibers remain among the region’s most valuable resources, contributing significantly to sustainable materials development, textile innovation, community livelihoods, and culture-based industries in Western Visayas. Recognizing this potential, the Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI) has spearheaded initiatives to strengthen collaboration among State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), partner agencies, and stakeholders in the natural fiber and textile sector.

One of these initiatives was the Crafting of the Regional Natural Fiber and Textile Research, Development, and Innovation Agenda and Roadmap for Western Visayas conducted on February 19–20, 2026, followed by a roadmap finalization activity in March 2026. These activities focused on collaboratively formulating and refining the regional Natural Fiber and Textile RDI Agenda through discussions on priority programs, policy directions, and coordination mechanisms for the sector.

As the next phase of this regional initiative, the Proposal Writeshop serves as a venue for participating groups, particularly those involved in Production, Processing, Product Development, and Natural Dye, to develop and refine proposals that address the priority needs of the natural fiber and textile sector. The activity also ensures that proposed initiatives are harmonized with the Western Visayas Regional Natural Fiber and Textile Innovation Agenda and Roadmap and aligned with Aklan State University’s 𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗔 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬 direction.

Overall, the writeshop aims to strengthen regional collaboration, promote coordinated proposal development, and support the implementation of strategic, impactful, and innovation-driven RDI initiatives that will contribute to the continued advancement of the natural fiber and textile industry in Western Visayas.
