𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀’ 𝟭𝟮𝟳𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆: 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

In the Philippines, Republic Act No. 4166 declared June 12 as 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆, shifting the celebration from its original date of July 4. In this 127th year of commemoration, the theme “𝙆𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙖𝙣, 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙪𝙠𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙣, 𝙆𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙮𝙨𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙣” is emphasized to inspire Filipinos to cherish the nation’s rich history as they work collaboratively towards a brighter future.

This notable day is also referred to as “Araw ng Kasarinlan” or “Araw ng Kalayaan.” It serves as a historical commemoration of the conclusion of a prolonged and challenging struggle for independence.

Literally, the country experienced three distinct declarations of independence throughout its history. The first occurred on June 12, 1898, when Emilio Aguinaldo, the revolutionary commander, proclaimed the country's independence in Kawit, Cavite, effectively ending 333 years of Spanish colonial rule. The second declaration took place on October 14, 1943, during the Japanese occupation, under the presidency of Jose P. Laurel. Finally, the country achieved its long-awaited independence from Japanese control when the United States reasserted authority and officially recognized the sovereignty of the Philippines on July 4, 1946.

According to the Official Gazette (2015), the United States formally acknowledged the independence of the Republic of the Philippines on July 4, 1946. This acknowledgment represented the culmination of a process that commenced in 1916 with the enactment of the Jones Law, which committed to the eventual recognition of Philippine independence. The Philippine Independence Act, also known as the Tydings-McDuffie Act of 1934, established a ten-year transitional period to facilitate preparations for this independence. The formal declaration of independence was marked by Manuel Roxas taking his oath as President of the Philippines, during which he eliminated the requirement of a pledge of allegiance to the United States that had been mandated prior to independence.

This year's celebration integrated historical significance, patriotism, and cultural appreciation—serving as a unified tribute to the legacy of Filipino heroes and a hopeful stride toward a more innovative and united future.

So, take a moment to reflect not only on the historical accounts documented in our texts, but also on the innumerable narratives of the extraordinary contributions made by our heroes—their bravery, sacrifice, and aspirations that have contributed to our freedom.

Let us appreciate our nation's rich history and leverage the freedoms granted by our forebears to build a brighter future for our country.

Each nation has different cultures, values, beliefs, attitudes, views, and opinions from one another which makes its people unique individuals. Countries vary in size, power, and economic development—some are wealthy, while others are struggling. It's important to remember that these differences should not hinder nations from building strong partnerships and working together for mutual prosperity.

The founding of the United Nations makes such partnerships more plausible. Despite differences in beliefs, values, and strengths, the UN allows nations to unite, fostering cooperation and preventing powerful nations from exploiting weaker ones. Respecting and embracing intercultural differences is fundamental to this partnership. The United Nations has emerged as a beacon of hope for individuals worldwide, advocating for peace, security, human rights, and sustainable environmental development.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟰, the world celebrates 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, commemorating the UN's establishment in 1945. This day emphasizes the importance of international dialogue, collaboration, and collective action in creating a world where peace, security, progress, and human rights are accessible. People from diverse nations demonstrate their commitment to these shared values. While challenges and difficulties may seem insurmountable, the spirit of unity that has guided the UN since its inception remains the strongest tool for building a better future for generations to come.

We should embrace our differences and celebrate the fact that despite coming from different nations, we are united as one.

𝐀 𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐀𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐀𝐬

On March 15th, 2024, a group of 𝓼𝓸𝓹𝓱𝓸𝓶𝓸𝓻𝓮 and 𝓳𝓾𝓷𝓲𝓸𝓻 students who were pursuing a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Social Studies at the University of Eastern Pangasinan were privileged to attend Lecture Series #1. This event was organized by the Province of Pangasinan through the Center for Pangasinan Studies at the PHINMA University of Pangasinan Gymnasium.

The lecture series was titled "𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘢𝘯 𝘕𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘴, 𝘗𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯 (1587-1898)," and had a primary objective of expanding the knowledge of the attendees about the society, culture, history, and environment of the province of Pangasinan. Through this seminar, the students were able to gain valuable insights and knowledge about the locality of San Nicolas, Pangasinan.

The seminar was conducted by expert speaker, 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙛. 𝙍𝙖𝙮𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙤 𝘿. 𝙍𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙨, Ph.D. who shared his expertise, research, and knowledge about Pangasinan's rich heritage, Malico, San Nicolas Pangasinan. The event was a huge success and provided a great platform for the students to learn more about their heritage and the places they belonged to. Overall, the seminar was an excellent opportunity for the attendees to broaden their horizons and develop a deeper appreciation for the rich culture and history of the Pangasinan.

𝐀 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲.

𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞'𝐬 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of EDSA signifies the 𝓫𝓻𝓪𝓿𝓮𝓻𝔂 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓼𝓸𝓵𝓲𝓭𝓪𝓻𝓲𝓽𝔂 that drove the Philippines to take back its own voice and determine its own course in life.

On February 25, 1986, the People Power Revolution, also known as the EDSA Revolution, 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘍𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘰𝘴 𝘚𝘳.'𝘴 20-𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴. This was a significant event in the country's history, as it marked the overthrow of a dictatorship and the reinstatement of democracy.

Filipinos' unwavering spirit in the face of oppression is demonstrated by the EDSA People's Power Revolution. A dictatorship was overthrown, democracy was reinstated, and a better future for Filipinos was made possible by this historic event. Recalling the sacrifices made by those who battled for liberty and democracy, let us honor the anniversary of this momentous occasion. Their bravery and solidarity drove us to keep and defend 𝓳𝓾𝓼𝓽𝓲𝓬𝓮, 𝓮𝓺𝓾𝓪𝓵𝓲𝓽𝔂, 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓹𝓮𝓪𝓬𝓮 in our country.

It stands for the Filipino people's tenacity in the face of injustice and their struggle for democracy and freedom. This historic event, which changed Philippine history, brought democracy back and abolished martial law.

However, it is unfortunate that the EDSA Revolution Anniversary was dropped from the list of holidays in the country for the year 2024 through Proclamation 368, s.2023, on October 11, 2023. Despite this, we should always remember the bravery and solidarity of those who fought for justice, equality, and peace in our country.
