The Bolinao Marine Laboratory extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the Marine Environment and Resources Foundation Inc. (MERF Inc.) for the generous donation of two research vessels.

The vessels, Kalangga and ACIAR, were blessed and officially launched last February 12, 2026โ€”marking the beginning of many research journeys ahead.

With this support, the Bolinao Marine Laboratory is now more equipped than ever to carry out fieldwork and advance marine research. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿšค

Representatives from the Bolinao Marine Laboratory attended the review and update of the 2022 UP Diliman Land Use Development and Infrastructure Plan (LUDIP) yesterday. The planning workshop focused on BMLโ€™s futureโ€”covering land use, infrastructure development, and strategies for sustainability and resilience.

The Bolinao Marine Laboratory extends its sincere gratitude to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development for the opportunity and for making this productive and insightful workshop possible.

Warming ocean temperatures caused by climate change have triggered coral bleaching globally and have negatively affected marine biodiversity.

To monitor marine heatwave events, the UPD MSI-led marine heatwave tracker provides real-time monitoring of heatwave locations, enabling the identification of sites under threat and prioritization of efforts on the affected areas.

We are very proud of our mother, Jullysa Curiano Uyโœจโœจโœจ

This February 11, MSI proudly joins the global celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Marine science demands long days at sea, life aboard research vessels, and travel to remote coastal sitesโ€”challenges that women often face while also carrying unseen yet deeply felt responsibilities at home. Yet globally, women made up only around 30% of scientific researchers in 2022, according to the United Nations.

At MSI, we are proud that 44โ€“45% of our students and research staff are women, rising to 60% among our resident, Emeritus, and retired faculty. These women push boundaries, lead discoveries, and demonstrate that science thrives when talent, perseverance, and determination are given space to grow.

Today, we celebrate the women shaping marine science for the nationโ€”and we encourage every young girl to believe that she, too, belongs in science, at sea, and at the forefront of discovery.

The Philippine seaweed industry is largely centered on the cultivation of eucheumatoids such as These species are key sources of carrageenan, a valuable hydrocolloid widely used in food and household products.

Want to learn more about the current state of the Philippine eucheumatoid seaweed industry?

The Algal Ecophysiology Laboratory invites everyone to a public seminar by Professor Michael Roleda on 9 February 2026 (10 AM โ€“ 12 NN) at the MSI AVR, EDG Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman.

In this seminar, Professor Roleda will discuss the current status of raw dried seaweed production in the Philippines, as well as the environmental and socio-economic challenges that affect the sustainability of the countryโ€™s eucheumatoid seaweed industry.

This public seminar is co-organized by the UP Marine Science Institute and W Hydrocolloids, Inc., with special guests from key seaweed industry players such as Fonterra and Sherratt Ingredients, and UP Officials. The talk will be graced by Rosalind Wee as the Guest Speaker and Academician and Professor Emeritus Dr. Gisela Conception as the Master of Ceremonies.
