The Mindanao State University – Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO) proudly congratulates Ms. Sitti Amina R. Moh. Tilka, MS, faculty member of the Institute of Oceanography and Environmental Science (IOES), for being recognized as the Best Oral Presenter in Aquaculture at the 13th International Fisheries Symposium (IFS) 2025, held at Diponegoro University (UNDIP), Indonesia under the ASEAN Fisheries Education Network.

Her award-winning paper, “Growth and Health of Wedge Sea Hare (Dollabella auricularia) Fed with Diets of Different Algal Inclusion", impressed the judges with its clarity, research complexity, effective delivery, and mastery during Q&A sessions. Among presenters from various institutions and countries, Ms. Tilka stood out for her ability to communicate complex scientific ideas with confidence and precision, highlighting both her research expertise and her dedication to advancing aquaculture science.

The Best Oral Presenter Award is one of the most prestigious distinctions at IFS, recognizing excellence in presentation quality, coherence, research significance, and audience engagement. Ms. Tilka’s achievement not only brings pride to MSU-TCTO but also reinforces the University’s commitment to research excellence and international collaboration in marine and environmental sciences.

She was guided by her supervisors Prof. Dr. Ainulyakin H. Imlani , Prof. Dr. Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali, Asst. Prof. Dr. Dyahruri Sanjayasari, Asst. Prof. Jurmin Sarri, and Associate Prof. Melodina Dindin Hairol, whose mentorship contributed significantly to this accomplishment.

Dr. Noville Jay Ebina Guides IOES Students in Lecture on Research Proposal and Thesis Writing

On November 6, 2025, at 1:30 PM, the 3rd-year BS Environmental Science students organized a lecture titled “Research Proposal and Thesis Writing” which was delivered by Dr. Noville Jay G. Ebina, a professor from the Department of Biological Sciences, (CSM), MSU-IIT through the guidance of Ms. Zharifa G. Rasul, MSc, instructor in Env031: Animal Taxonomy and Nomenclature. The event was held at the DEL, Institute of Information and Communications Technology building, MSU Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU TCTO), and was attended by students from the Institute of Oceanography and Environmental Science (IOES).

Dr. Ebina discussed the essential steps in preparing a thesis, emphasizing the importance of planning, data gathering, and analysis. He underscored the need for clear objectives and provided practical advice on how to select research topics, formulate research questions, develop conceptual frameworks, and design methodologies. He also pointed out common mistakes frequently encountered in student research papers.

The lecture concluded with an Open Forum, where students asked questions regarding the frequent rejection of research proposals and the proper formulation of survey questionnaires. Dr. Ebina addressed each concern and offered useful examples to guide the students in improving their research work.

Dr. Elvin Sansona Explores Amphibian Taxonomy in Lecture at MSU TCTO

On October 16, 2025, at 10:00 AM, the 3rd-year BS Environmental Science students organized a lecture titled “Understanding Animal Taxonomy in the Amphibian Tree of Life” with the guidance from the Env031: Animal Taxonomic and Nomenclature instructor, Ms. Zharifa G. Rasul, MSc, and was delivered by Dr. Elvin R. Sansona, a professor from the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS), (CSM), MSU-IIT. The event took place at the iLab, College of Arts and Sciences, MSU Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU TCTO), and was attended by students from the Institute of Oceanography and Environmental Science (IOES).

Dr. Sansona discussed how taxonomy helps in understanding the evolutionary relationships among amphibian groups. He further elaborated on the major orders, distinguishing traits, and the use of morphological characteristics in identifying species. Drawing from his own research, he shared examples of amphibian species he personally studied and emphasized the importance of accurate classification in biodiversity conservation.

The lecture deepened the students’ understanding of how amphibians fit within the broader tree of life and provided valuable insights for their academic and research pursuits. The session concluded with an Open Forum, where attendees raised questions that Dr. Sansona answered with enthusiasm and expertise.

We are proud to announce that the Mindanao State University – Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO) has been formally granted the Authority to Offer the Master of Science in Marine Biology (MSMB) program. This authorization was duly confirmed by the MSU Board of Regents during its most recent MSU Executive Committee Meeting officially signed by the MSU System President, Atty. Paisalin Pangandaman Tago, CPA.

This achievement has been made possible through the visionary leadership and unwavering support of Chancellor Mary Joyce Z. Guinto-Sali, as well as the commitment and hard work of the Institute of Oceanography and Environmental Science (IOES) faculty and staff, whose collective efforts have been instrumental in realizing this milestone.

The Institute of Oceanography and Environmental Science (IOES) successfully conducted a Seminar-Workshop on Enhancing Curriculum Design and Evaluation Techniques for Effective Teaching on August 11, 2025 at the Audio-Visual Room, Integrated Science Laboratory, MSU-TCTO, Sanga-Sanga.

The resource person was Assoc. Prof. Bonjovi H. Hajan, a Faculty Member of the College of Education, MSU-TCTO. With his extensive background in education and pedagogy, Prof. Hajan shared valuable insights on innovative curriculum design, and effective assessment strategies. His lecture-discussion and interactive approach provided participants with practical knowledge and tools that they can apply in their own teaching, making the session both informative and engaging.

The training-workshop aimed to enhance faculty competence in curriculum development, provide practical strategies for designing learner-centered instruction, and introduce effective evaluation techniques to measure student performance and learning outcomes.

Participants included the faculty members from IOES and the Science High School–Integrated Laboratory School, who actively engaged in discussions and hands-on activities to further strengthen teaching strategies and curriculum development.
