ADRENALINE AND PRESENCE OF MIND

Chaos, urgency, and critical decision-making filled the air as 4th-year nursing students at the University of Cebu โ€“ South participated in the campus's first-ever Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) Simulation.

Designed to mirror high-stakes disaster scenarios, the exercise plunged students into the unpredictable world of emergency healthcare. The simulation challenged participants to respond rapidly, manage a surge of multiple patients, and maintain composure in a high-stress environment where adaptability and teamwork are the differences between life and death.

Clinical instructor, Sheila Sarabosing-Berdin, explained that the initiative was born out of a need for more "authentic" learning. "We pushed this because I wanted my students to learn beyond the classroom and theory," Berdin said. "In nursing and in real life especially during disaster situations which most of the time we are not prepared. As nurses, we are the first line of care, and we must be ready for that reality."

Ms. Berdin emphasized that resilience and the ability to prioritize are traits that cannot be fully grasped through textbooks. "The ability to adjust and the ability to accept the things you cannot change can only be learned outside the walls of the classroom," she added.

The sentiment was echoed by fellow clinical instructor, Elaiza Campos, who observed how the realistic nature of the drill forced students to confront the psychological weight of the profession.

โ€œRealistic simulation of stress exposes students to pressure and unpredictability,โ€ Ms. Campos shared. โ€œThey learn how to stay calm while still being effective despite stressful events.โ€

Ms. Campos further noted that the activity was instrumental in helping students strengthen their communication, teamwork, decision-making, and most importantly patient prioritization skills.

The success of the simulation was bolstered by local partnerships. The REAVO Cebu Chapter provided expert guidance, training the students in specialized disaster response and management techniques. Barangay Bulacao also played a vital role, deploying fire trucks and an ambulance to ensure the simulation felt as authentic as possible.

By bridging the gap between theory and practice, the University of Cebu โ€“ South continues to equip its future nurses with the hands-on experience required to handle the heavy responsibilities of the healthcare profession.

RISING RESILIENCE: NURSINGALES SOARS WITH PRIDE

IN CAMPUS โ€” Soars with pride, determination, and school spirit echoed across the grounds as the College of Nursing, the Nursingales showcased resilience, talent, and heart during the four-day Intramurals 2026, proving once again that the white uniform carries not only compassion, but also the spirit of champions.

Throughout the intense four-day competition, the Nursingales demonstrated excellence across both athletic and academic arenas, leaving their mark in multiple events and proudly representing the College of Nursing with discipline, teamwork, and unwavering determination.

Leading the charge were the Womenโ€™s Basketball and Womenโ€™s Volleyball teams, who once again cemented their legacy as back-to-back champions. With unmatched chemistry on the court, the Nursingales women dominated their respective tournaments with powerful plays, relentless defense, and championship composure. Their victories were not just wins, but statements, proof that the queens of the court remain firmly seated on their throne.

Meanwhile, The Men's Basketball team delivered a thrilling campaign that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Fighting through intense matchups, the Nursingales secured 1st place, demonstrating grit, discipline, and heart. Though the championship narrowly slipped away, the team showed the spirit of warriors who refuse to stay down. Their journey this season was only the beginning, a promise that they will return stronger, sharper, and hungrier for the crown.

The same fire was seen in the Menโ€™s Volleyball team, who battled fiercely to secure 3rd place in a highly competitive bracket. Every spike, dig, and rally reflected a team determined to rise. While the podium finish marks a proud moment, the squad carries a quiet storm of motivation, a vow to come back next season with greater strength and unfinished business.

Beyond the courts, the Nursingales proved that brilliance extends far beyond physical competition.

The Speech Choir team triumphantly reclaimed the championship, marking a powerful return of a title that many believe rightfully belongs to the College of Nursing. With synchronized voices, emotional delivery, and commanding stage presence, the team captivated the audience and judges alike, proving that the crown has indeed returned to its rightful home.

Individual speaking events also saw Nursingales rise to the top. The College of Nursing proudly claimed the Championship in Declamation and Extemporaneous Speaking, where representatives displayed remarkable confidence, intellect, and eloquence. Their powerful words resonated through the venue, reminding everyone that nurses are not only skilled in care, but also in voice and leadership.

The Nursingales also proved their strategic brilliance in Chess, emerging as the Overall Champion for both Menโ€™s and Womenโ€™s divisions. With calm focus and calculated moves, the team dominated the boards, showcasing patience, intelligence, and mental strength.

In the world of wordplay, the Nursingales claimed the Menโ€™s Scrabble Champions title, while the women secured 2nd place, further demonstrating the academic excellence of the college. The Quiz Bowl team also delivered an impressive performance, securing 1st place after a gripping battle of knowledge.

Athletic competitions in racquet sports also saw strong finishes from the college. In Badminton, Nursingales athletes delivered remarkable performances, claiming multiple 1st place finishes in Menโ€™s Singles, Menโ€™s Doubles, and Womenโ€™s Singles, while also securing 2nd place in Womenโ€™s Doubles. Each match displayed discipline, endurance, and unwavering competitive spirit.

The momentum continued in Table Tennis, where Nursingales representatives earned 2nd place in Mixed Doubles and 3rd place in Womenโ€™s Singles, while the Track and Field team sprinted their way to victory with 2nd place finishes in the 50-meter dash and Baton Relay.

Artistic talents were equally celebrated as the Nursingales dominated the dance floor in Hip-Hop, capturing the Champions title with electrifying choreography, confidence, and energy that brought the crowd to its feet. In the Vocal Duet competition, the college also secured 1st place, proving that talent and creativity thrive within the Nursing community.

Although the four-day intramurals have come to a close, the journey of the Nursingales continues. Every victory, every near-miss, and every challenge faced throughout the competition has become part of the story that shapes the strength of the college.

For the Nursingales, the journey does not stop here. The lessons learned from these four days will fuel a stronger comeback, a future where titles will be reclaimed, victories will be louder, and pride will shine even brighter.

And as the next intramurals approach, the Nursingales carry one promise in their hearts:

We will rise again. We will fight again. And we will reclaim what is rightfully ours. Because the spirit of the Nursingales is not defined by a single competition.

It is defined by resilience, unity, and the courage to rise stronger every time.

A Promise in White: Nursing and Midwifery Students of UCPT Embrace the Call to Serve

At the heart of the ceremony hall of Cebu Coliseum, white uniforms glowed under soft lights as candles flickered gently in steady hands.

It was not merely a program on the calendar. It was a defining moment.
For the second-year students of the College of Nursing, the Capping and Badge Investiture Ceremony marked their formal transition from classroom learners to student nurses entrusted with clinical responsibilities.

For the College of Midwifery, the Candle Lighting Ceremony symbolized their sacred commitment to safeguard life from its very first breath.

More than a tradition, the ceremony was a promise.

For Clinical Instructor Maโ€™am Maria Corazon Lourdes C. Lucin, the ceremony represented something deeper than academic progression. It was about growth not only in skill, but in character.

โ€œAs a nurse-educator, I see myself first and foremost as a teacher,โ€ she shared. โ€œLearning must truly happen not just in lectures, but through experience and example.โ€

She upholds what she calls the 3As: Acceptance, Accountability, and Adaptability.

Acceptance, she explained, is recognizing both strengths and weaknesses with humility. Accountability means owning mistakes and turning them into lifelong lessons. Adaptability is the willingness to grow through change and challenges.

โ€œIn nursing, mistakes are not taken lightly,โ€ she emphasized. โ€œBut a mistake should become a lesson, ideally a one-time blunder that strengthens judgment and deepens responsibility.โ€

Her own journey into nursing was built on sacrifice. Once dreaming of becoming a doctor, financial realities led her to choose nursing in a government-subsidized college. As the eldest daughter, she balanced studies with helping in her grandmotherโ€™s carenderia and supporting her family when her father lost his job.

โ€œI may not have become a doctor,โ€ she reflected, โ€œbut I became something equally purposeful โ€” a nurse who serves with heart, and an educator who shapes future nurses.โ€

Through her students, she continues to heal.

For Franz Aidyl Gabriel Suico, a second-year nursing student, the moment the badge and candle were placed in his hands felt heavy not in weight, but in meaning.

โ€œThis ceremony is the moment when I start doing my duties as a soon-to-be nurse,โ€ he shared. โ€œWhen they place the badge and candle in your hands, they trust you with the lives of the people you will soon serve.โ€

For him, the event represents a commitment, a conscious choice to pursue a profession he knows will demand long hours, emotional strength, and sacrifice.

โ€œIt is my commitment to serve and to continue learning, even when the works feels drainingโ€ Franz said. โ€œNursing demands character more than power.โ€
He understands that mistakes are inevitable because nurses are human.

But for Franz, what defines a nurse is not he absence of errors it is the response to them.

โ€œWhen I make a mistake. I will admit it immediately. I will inform my Clinical Instructor or the nurse in charge.โ€ he said firmly. โ€œ I will never hide errors.โ€

He believes that mistakes are meant to be learned from, not repeated, but improved upon. In a profession where lives are on the line, every lesson becomes a responsibility
Franz dreams of becoming an Emergency Room nurse calm in crisis, clear in communication, and grounded in integrity.

โ€œMost of all,โ€ he added, โ€œI want to become a nurse who practices integrity even when no one is watching.โ€

For Franz, the badge is not just an emblem. It is a promise chosen willingly, carried faithfully.

Marc Cyrus Faciolan, also a second-year nursing student and a student leader, shared that nursing was not initially his first choice. Yet somewhere between sleepless nights studying anatomy and long clinical duties, his perspective shifted.

โ€œNursing for nurturing people is my thing,โ€ he said. โ€œBut care and nurture alone are just part of the whole thing.โ€
What kept him going through heavy workloads and exhaustion?

โ€œMy grit, drive, and heart for the patients.โ€
He described grit as his weapon, the perseverance and courage that carried him through challenges. His drive, he said, is something greater than himself. And his heart for patients makes every sacrifice worthwhile.

โ€œThis event symbolizes our sleepless nights, our parentsโ€™ sacrifices, our Clinical Instructorsโ€™ efforts,โ€ Marc expressed. โ€œIt is part of the process of becoming a Registered Nurse in Godโ€™s perfect time.โ€

For Ms. Shaira Mae Amante of the College of Midwifery, the Candle Lighting Ceremony was profoundly personal.

Her inspiration began at home. Growing up with a mother who worked as a midwife, she witnessed compassion in action especially in remote areas where healthcare was scarce.

As a teenager, she faced a life-changing moment. At 18 years old, in a remote area far from medical facilities, she helped a mother deliver her baby during an emergency. With limited resources but guided by the knowledge she absorbed from her mother, she remained calm and assisted in the safe delivery of new life.

โ€œThat experience strengthened my desire to become a midwife,โ€ she said. โ€œI realized midwifery is more than assisting childbirth. It is about being a source of strength and reassurance.โ€

As she held her candle during the ceremony, she saw more than a flame.

โ€œThe candle represents compassion, courage, and commitment,โ€ she shared. โ€œIt reminds me that I am called to serve especially in places where mothers need support the most.โ€

The Capping, Badge Investiture, and Candle Lighting Ceremony of the UCPT Campus was not simply a rite of passage. It was a declaration of responsibility.

It honored the sacrifices of families. It recognized the mentorship of educators. It celebrated resilience, grit, and unwavering compassion.

In their crisp white uniforms, these student nurses and midwives stood not just as students, but as future frontliners ready to carry badges as symbols of trust and candles as symbols of hope.

And as the lights dimmed and the flames continued to glow, one truth became clear:
They are no longer just learning how to care.

They are becoming the light that will guide others toward healing.
