Student boarders convened for a seminar conducted held this morning, October 22, at the Conference Room of the Administrative Building. With the theme “KUMUSTAHAN: Building a Supportive Community for Student Boarders”, the event was organized by the Guidance and Counseling Services Unit (GCSU), Gender and Development Office, and the Food and Housing Services Unit, with the support of the Supreme Student Council (SSC).

It was a “𝘮𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘸” for the Campus Director, Dr. Abner Dellosa as he delivered his message for the welcome remarks. In his message, he extended his comfort and understanding to students who continue to pursue their dreams while being away from their family. He acknowledged the challenges of homesickness and added that education is not just about earning a degree, but also learning independence and becoming the person one aspires to be.

Following the message of the Campus Director, Ma’am Almares, Coordinator of Food and Housing Services Unit, presented the rationale, objectives, and overview of the activity. The activity was composed of three parts: the three learning sessions, the Kumustahan session, and the distribution of kits.

The first session commenced with Ma’am Mary Ann J. Jintalan, Head of Guidance and Counseling Servuces, as the resource speaker. The talk, entitled “When Things Get Tough: Building Resilience and Coping Mechanism”, centered on understanding stress and developing healthy coping strategies.

“𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴.”

Ma’am Jintalan explained that stress is a natural and physiological response and that learning how to handle it is vital to build resilience.

Here are the three discussed strategies for handling and responding to stress:

a) The 4 R’s, where students were taught how to Regulate, Recharge, Reconnect, and Refocus.
b) The 10-Second Reset, a quick technique composed of four steps: Stop, Breathe, Notice, and Choose.
c) The Coping Toolbox, a collection of actionable coping tools which include naming the things sensed in the environment, writing out your thoughts and emotions, moving your body, creating a routine, and taking a healthy break—then return.

The participants also collectively performed a breathing exercise which was identified as an effective way to manage stress and help create healthy neurons.

“𝘏𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪 𝘮𝘰 𝘬𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘢𝘯 𝘭𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘴𝘢𝘣𝘪 𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘰.”

Ma’am Jintalan aslo provided an informative discussion on neuroplasticity and the functions of the brain in relation to emotions. Two key regions of the brain were mentioned by the speaker, such as:

- The Amygdala which is responsible for the brain’s survival and emotional response. “𝘔𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘭𝘪 𝘬𝘪𝘵𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘨-𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘴𝘢𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘬𝘢𝘴𝘪 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦 ‘𝘺𝘢𝘯 𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯,” she stated on her discussion. This explains why intense reactions occur quickly.

- The Cerebral Cortex. Ma’am Jintalan emphasized that when an individual names what he or she is feeling, this brain region is activated, which helps the person cope effectively.

Ma’am Jintalan also distinguished healthy and unhelpful coping to promote long-term well-being and encouraged everyone to reach out for help, saying “𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦.”

Lastly, Ma’am Jintalan taught appropriate ways to respond when someone expresses that they are not okay. This includes listening with empathy, validating their emotions, and offering genuine support.

The second session was facilitated by Ma’am Krishia Lachica, the Guidance-in-charge. The session was entitled “BOARDING TOGETHER, RESPECTING EACH OTHER: Gender Equality and Safe Spaces in Student Living.” It was focused on promoting gender sensitivity and establishing a safe, respectful, and supportive environment within boarding houses and shared living spaces.

Ma’am Lachica discussed common gender stereotypes that persist in boarding house and bedspace setting. She also stressed the importance of setting clear boundaries, and emphasized that the concept of safe spaces extends beyond campus gates and boarding houses, as she introduced the legal protection available to everyone, specifically the Republic Act No. 11313 or the Safe Spaces Act (Bawal Bastos Law).

The third session was presented by Ma’am Kimberly M. Almares. With the title “Healthy Habits, Better Boarding: A Guide to Wellness for Student Boarders”, the discussion was focused on promoting a healthy lifestyle within the boarding house setting to ensure a better and more productive boarding experience. She stressed the importance of adopting healthy habits living away from home, because a healthy lifestyle enables boarder to stay physically healthy, improve concentration, manage daily stress, and adjust better to boarding life.

Ma’am Kimberly outlined the fundamental practices that contribute to overall well-being, such as proper nutrition and sleep, personal hygiene and cleanliness.

After the three sessions, a kumustahan session was conducted, where the participants were divided into three circles, each handled by Ma’am Lachica, Ma’am Jintalan, and Ma’am Almares. It was a moment where students were able to share how they are doing, their boarding experiences, and the things they are stressing about.

The seminar concluded with the free kits, consisting of laundry products, being distributed for the student boarders to take home and use in their boarding house. The seminar ended with a photo opportunity. The activity aimed to promote a safe, healthy, respectful, and supportive environment for student boarders. The students left the conference room with a refreshed minds and lightened burdens after having the opportunity to connect with fellow boarders and share their stories.
