In its continuing effort to build an environmentally responsible and sustainable academic community, the Mindanao State University โ€“ Buug Campus (MSU-Buug) has officially banned the use of plastic bottles for beverages within the campus premises. This bold environmental action is part of the universityโ€™s commitment to reduce single-use plastic waste and support the goals of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 12 โ€“ Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13 โ€“ Climate Action.

The ban covers all beverages sold, served, or distributed in plastic bottles, including soda, water, juices, and energy drinks. It aligns with the universityโ€™s advocacy to minimize plastic pollution that clogs waterways, harms marine life, and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions when improperly disposed of or burned.

Under the new policy, canteen concessionaires and vendors are encouraged to use glass bottles for soda and juice products, while water dispensers and refill stations are recommended for drinking water. Students, faculty, and staff are likewise urged to bring their own reusable tumblers or containers, promoting a culture of waste reduction and personal responsibility.

Glass bottles offer numerous advantages over plastic:
โ€ข Reusable and recyclable: Glass can be recycled endlessly without loss of quality, reducing waste significantly.
โ€ข Non-toxic and safe: Unlike some plastics, glass does not leach harmful chemicals into beverages.
โ€ข Environmentally friendly: Producing and reusing glass emits less pollution over time compared to the continuous production of disposable plastic bottles.
โ€ข Aesthetic and durable: Glass containers preserve the taste and freshness of beverages while promoting a cleaner, more sustainable image.

MSU-Buug encourages its entire community โ€” students, employees, concessionaires, and visitors โ€” to embrace the shift from plastic to glass. Every glass bottle reused and every plastic bottle refused contributes to a cleaner campus, healthier ecosystems, and a more sustainable future.

By taking this stand, MSU-Buug continues to demonstrate environmental leadership among academic institutions in Mindanao, proving that simple, collective actions can make a lasting impact on the planet. Together, let us make our university a plastic-free and eco-friendly campus.

Located at the center of the campus, the MSU-Buug pond is more than a scenic feature โ€” it serves as a natural learning space and an important environmental asset. Students, use it for field observations, biodiversity checks, and ecological discussions, gaining hands-on learning beyond the classroom.

Environmentally, the pond functions as a stormwater catchment, supports micro-habitats for aquatic life, cools the surroundings, and improves campus air quality โ€” essential contributions to SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Communities).

Its surroundings โ€” sheds, benches, landscaped plants, and shaded areas โ€” provide a peaceful space for studying, reflection, and student gatherings, making it a hub for both academic engagement and wellness.

Because of its educational and ecological value, the pond must be protected and maintained through responsible use, regular cleaning, and continued landscaping. Preserving it means sustaining a living laboratory and a tranquil green refuge that benefits current and future generations of MSU-Buug students.

As part of its continuing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, the Mindanao State University โ€“ Buug Campus encourages all students, faculty, staff, and concessionaires to shift from single-use plastics and cellophane to eco-friendly, reusable, and biodegradable alternatives.

Plastic pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Single-use plastics such as sando bags, wrappers, and cellophane often end up in waterways, clogging drainage systems, polluting the soil, and harming marine and terrestrial life. To address this issue, MSU-Buug takes proactive steps toward reducing plastic waste within the campus and promoting sustainable consumption practices in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 โ€“ Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13 โ€“ Climate Action.

Instead of disposable plastics, the University encourages everyone to use:

โค๏ธReusable eco-bags made of cloth, canvas, or jute โ€“ Durable, washable, and long-lasting options that can be used for shopping, carrying books, or storing items.

โค๏ธBayong or woven bags made of native materials โ€“ Locally made and biodegradable, these traditional bags support local craftsmanship while protecting the environment.

โค๏ธRecycled paper bags or boxes โ€“ Ideal for packaging and take-out purposes, these are compostable and reduce plastic dependency.

โค๏ธOther sustainable and biodegradable packaging materials โ€“ Including bamboo, abaca, or other plant-based alternatives that leave no harmful residue.

Every small action counts. By bringing your own reusable bag or refusing plastic packaging, you help reduce the amount of non-biodegradable waste generated daily. Together, our simple acts of environmental responsibility can lead to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable MSU-Buug.

Let us make our campus a model of environmental awareness and actionโ€”one bag, one choice at a time.

The Mindanao State University โ€“ Buug Campus (MSU-Buug) continues to champion environmental responsibility by encouraging the use of stainless steel spoons and forks and reusable food containers instead of plastic gloves and single-use plastics.

Disposable gloves and plastic utensils may seem convenient, but they contribute heavily to pollution and waste. Once discarded, they take hundreds of years to decompose and harm ecosystems (Pilapitaya et al, 2024). According to Shino Aaron (2020), studentsโ€™ daily habits greatly influence waste reduction, and carrying reusable utensils helps cut plastic waste at its source.

By using stainless and reusable items, we reduce campus waste, save money, and protect our health. Properly sanitized utensils โ€” kept in containers with boiling water โ€” ensure cleanliness and safety, unlike disposable plastics that often harbor bacteria when reused.

Through this initiative, MSU-Buug strengthens its commitment to sustainability and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 12 and SDG 13).

Letโ€™s take part in this movement โ€” ditch disposables, choose reusables, and make MSU-Buug a model for a cleaner, greener future.

The Mindanao State University โ€“ Buug Campus is taking a firm stand for the planet. With the Board of Regentsโ€™ approval of the Policy on the Prohibition of Single-Use Plastics, we are now called to translate policy into daily practice โ€” through our choices, habits, and shared responsibility for the environment.

Every plastic bottle and cellophane we throw away tells a story โ€” one of pollution, waste, and disregard for our future. These single-use plastics clog waterways, pollute soils, and threaten marine life that depend on a healthy ecosystem (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP], 2024). When burned or broken down, plastics release significant amounts of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, contributing to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (Shen et al., 2024; Center for International Environmental Law [CIEL], 2023), harming both nature and humanity.

As a community of scholars, educators, and changemakers, we can choose differently.
Let us shift from convenience to conscience โ€” from bottled and cellophane-packed water to refillable containers, reusable tumblers, and gallons of shared water. This small act, when multiplied across our campus, becomes a powerful statement of leadership and care.

To our students, faculty, and staff: bring your own WATER TUMBLER wherever you go.
To our store and stall owners: be partners in sustainability by selling water by GALLONS or through PESO-WATER refilling systems instead of single-use plastics.

Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and climate-resilient MSU-Buug โ€” one tumbler, one refill, one decision at a time.

Letโ€™s make sustainability not just a policy, but a culture. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ง
