The Mindanao State University โ Buug Campus is taking a firm stand for the planet. With the Board of Regentsโ approval of the Policy on the Prohibition of Single-Use Plastics, we are now called to translate policy into daily practice โ through our choices, habits, and shared responsibility for the environment.
Every plastic bottle and cellophane we throw away tells a story โ one of pollution, waste, and disregard for our future. These single-use plastics clog waterways, pollute soils, and threaten marine life that depend on a healthy ecosystem (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP], 2024). When burned or broken down, plastics release significant amounts of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, contributing to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (Shen et al., 2024; Center for International Environmental Law [CIEL], 2023), harming both nature and humanity.
As a community of scholars, educators, and changemakers, we can choose differently.
Let us shift from convenience to conscience โ from bottled and cellophane-packed water to refillable containers, reusable tumblers, and gallons of shared water. This small act, when multiplied across our campus, becomes a powerful statement of leadership and care.
To our students, faculty, and staff: bring your own WATER TUMBLER wherever you go.
To our store and stall owners: be partners in sustainability by selling water by GALLONS or through PESO-WATER refilling systems instead of single-use plastics.
Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and climate-resilient MSU-Buug โ one tumbler, one refill, one decision at a time.
Letโs make sustainability not just a policy, but a culture. ๐ฟ๐ง
