Quirino State University combined advocacy with celebration yesterday, December 17, as it concluded the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW). Held at the Diffun Campus Gymnasium, the event integrated the campaignโ€™s closing ceremonies into the Universityโ€™s annual year-end celebration.

The event commenced with a Holy Mass to bless the occasion. Rev. Noel M. Erana reminded the community of its sacred call to protect one another. He urged everyone to be the generation that says "enough" to violations and to build a safe space for all, ensuring every woman and child is protected from harm. He encouraged attendees to be beacons of peace by putting their faith into action.

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Cherry P. Collado, Chief Administrative Officer for Finance, emphasized the institutionโ€™s duty to combat VAWC. She reminded the personnel that the campaignโ€™s central message is to โ€œEnd VAWC and start to value all women and children.โ€

Furthermore, Dr. Elizabeth T. Carig, Vice President for Academic, Research, and Extension, stated in her message that the Universityโ€™s achievements are measured not only by board exam passing rates or completed research, but by its shared commitment to a safe and respectful campus for all.

Moreover, Dr. Hermenegildo F. Samoy, University President, shared progress on the ongoing mission to uphold Gender and Development (GAD) and the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW). He stated that excellence must be rooted in respect and compassion, noting that the Christmas season reminds us that hope arrives even in difficult times.

The program continued with the signing of a pledge of commitment, attesting that the University collaboratively joins the efforts to end VAWC. This was followed by a lively unity dance and parlor games that added fun to the celebration.

The event concluded with a closing prayer led by Dr. Leila Sabbaluca, Supervising Administrative Officer, who expressed hope for a safe, respectful, and compassionate campus environment.

26/11/2025

Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, an annual observance advocating for womenโ€™s rights and safety worldwide. This yearโ€™s commemoration is amplified by a stark new global report and a strong focus on the rise of digital abuse.

New estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UN partners show that violence against women remains a persistent human rights crisis. About one in three women globally have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetimeโ€”a figure that has barely shifted in 20 years. The UN Secretary-General described this as a โ€œglobal scourgeโ€ and a โ€œdeeply neglected crisis.โ€

The day also launches the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, running until Human Rights Day on December 10. The 2025 theme, โ€œUNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls,โ€ highlights the internet as an increasingly dangerous space where women face harassment, deepfakes, and hate speech. These attacks often aim to silence womenโ€”particularly journalists, politicians, and activistsโ€”and can spill over into real-life stalking and physical harm.

In response, UN Women and partner agencies are calling for stronger government action and urgent funding, noting that only a small share of global development aid goes to violence prevention. Their key demands include criminalizing digital violence through clear and enforceable laws, holding tech companies accountable for safer online environments, and significantly increasing investment in survivor-centered legal, health, and social services.

Todayโ€™s observance serves as a call for global solidarityโ€”urging everyone to challenge misogynistic norms and stand as allies so that all women and girls can live free from fear and violence, both online and offline.
