According to KWF Dictionary, ๐จ๐๐รก๐ฃ๐ โtumutukoy sa salikop o hugpungan ng dalawa o higit pang lansangan, ilog, at iba pa, isang tagpuan kung saan nagsasalubong ang magkakaibang daloyโ. In another way, sabรกng refers to the mouth of a river, the place where fresh and salt waters meet.
It is at this meeting point that sabรกng finds its meaning.
This semesterโs Literary Folio explores the space between tradition and modernity, between what has been inherited and what is continually being transformed. Like the mouth of a river where fresh and salt waters converge, sabรกng is a space of encounter where old practices meet new technologies, where ancestral forms converse with contemporary expressions, and where the past does not simply disappear but finds new ways to flow.
Yet every encounter carries the possibility of loss. As technology, globalization, and changing ways of life reshape how we create, remember, and communicate, many traditional art forms and literary practices are gradually fading. Oral traditions become less frequently spoken. Indigenous and regional forms of expression risk being forgotten. Handcrafted practices give way to digital production. Forms that once traveled through voices, paper, bodies, and communities now find themselves competing withโor being transformed byโthe speed and reach of the digital world.
But sabรกng does not regard tradition and technology as opposites. Instead, it asks what happens when technology becomes the bridge between them.
How can digital spaces preserve art forms that are disappearing? How can old literary traditions be reimagined through contemporary media? What happens when a traditional poetic form enters the digital page, when an oral story becomes an audiovisual archive, or when inherited language finds new life through experimental and electronic poetry?
Through this folio, we invite writers and artists to explore the meeting, tension, disappearance, preservation, and transformation of tradition in the modern world. We seek works that examine and reexamine what can be carried forward, reinvented, and remembered.
