a digital photo exhibition.

Some students rely on their parents for allowance, some work part-time as working students, and some are beneficiaries of scholarship grants. Regardless of how students obtain money for day-to-day living, budgets are surely cut tight in an effort to make meets end in a post-pandemic world where everything is more expensive due to inflation. A clear line between wants and needs are starting to be drawn, with expensive options becoming the former, and affordable options becoming the latter. Luxuries such as frappuccino drinks from cafes, restaurant meals, and gadgets are becoming mere dreams for a lot of the students on a tight budget. In reality, instant iced coffee, karenderia, and pen and paper would suffice to meet one's needs while staying on budget.

The key takeaway from our exhibit is to put emphasis on the idea that although we may decide to choose more affordable or cheaper items such as food and learning materials due to our tight budgets, this does not mean that we are subjecting ourselves to things that are of lower quality. We must instill in our minds that cheap does not always mean bad, and expensive does not always mean good. We must come to realize that our experiences while living on a budget make us appreciate the not-so-little 'little' things in life - like the feeling of being full after eating a full meal from the karenderia. Budgeting as a college student is also a great life lesson, as it teaches us financial literacy. Experience, after all, is the best teacher.

The photos shown in our digital exhibit are glimpses of real-life experiences of us, students, that a lot of other students may relate to as well. We hope that our exhibit will give our audience some room to think and ponder, especially on enjoying the simple things in life despite surviving on a tight budget.

These sets of photos taken by Rigel Kent Soposo exhibit the dream of being able to use iPads and tablets to read books and take down notes. In reality, a lot of students opt for using traditional textbooks and writing on pads of paper instead.

School books and pads of paper are quite heavy, especially if you commute or walk to school. To be able to use a tablet or iPad to store a digital library with tens and hundreds of books, along with digital note-taking, would already be a luxury for a lot of students. In the end though, whether one would opt to embrace modern technology, or stay with the more affordable traditional textbooks and paper, whatโ€™s important is that we get to learn something valuable from our educational materials, and we get to take down our notes properly. Productivity, after all, is not defined by the cost of your learning materials, but with how you utilize your available resources to produce satisfactory work.

These sets of photos taken by Pauleanne Nacario exhibit the dream of being able to drive our own vehicles to campus. In reality, a lot of students opt to hike up the inclined planes and flights of stairs in USC-TC.

USC-TC, as weโ€™re quite familiar with, is a campus located in a mountainous area. Although the view is great, itโ€™s admittedly quite exhausting to hike up the flights of stairs and the inclining roads daily. It would be a dream for a lot of students to own their personal vehicles and effortlessly reach the buildings which are further up the Universityโ€™ vicinity. Students may also opt for the shuttle, but then again, 8 pesos for a ride may not be on the budget for some running tight on money. In the end, though, as long as we get to our classes safely, any mode of transportation would be adequate (unless youโ€™re running late, and itโ€™s an exam day). Hey, on the bright side, walking strengthens your leg muscles, and itโ€™s good for your cardiovascular health too!

These sets of photos taken by Iyanla Marie Parazo exhibit the dream of being able to use high-quality gel pens for note-taking and answering exams. In reality, students like us use affordable ballpoint pens on the daily.gel pens, which are quite expensive to replace. So, we usually settle with those more affordable ballpoint pens to use for our daily school activities, which are less expensive to replace if ever

The pen - an essential tool for a college student, used for taking down notes and answering exams and activities. Most of us have probably experienced losing or misplacing those pricey they get lost or misplaced. In the end, though, the price of the pen doesnโ€™t matter; it doesnโ€™t change the fact that the answers you wrote down are right or wrong, or if your notes are laid out neatly. Sure, the pages may get a little smudgy from the ink, but itโ€™s better than passing a blank test paper, right?

These sets of photos taken by Maia Carmela Baquiano exhibit the dream of being able to drink frappuccinos from cafes. In reality, students like us are only able to afford cheap iced coffee.

Like most college students, coffee is an indispensable drink that helps us get through those sleepless nights of studying and doing schoolwork. Being able to get oneโ€™s caffeine fix in the quiet, tranquil environment of a cafe would be a luxury that a lot of students would dream of. Most of the time, we just settle in our cozy homes or dorm rooms, sipping the 39-peso coffee we bought across the street. In the end, the cost of the coffee doesnโ€™t really matter, since they all get their jobs done by providing us with that dose of caffeine that gets our senses kicking throughout the night.

These sets of photos taken by Vince Bernal exhibit the dream of being able to eat food from restaurants. In reality, students like us are only able to afford food from karenderia or pungko-pungko.

After a long, tiring week, students typically go out to enjoy a good meal, as a way to treat themselves. But, as students on a tight budget, restaurant food is seemingly out of reach, with prices being three times higher than food from karenderia or pungko-pungko. In the end, though, it doesnโ€™t really matter, as long as we have food to fill our stomachs, and we are able to experience being full after a long, fulfilling meal. How fulfilling a meal is, after all, is not defined by how cheap it is. Good food will always be good, no matter the price.

We hope that through this digital gallery, fellow students may be able to relate with the struggles, and inspire them to share their sentiments, experiences, and feelings through creativity.
