For National Artist for Literature Resil B. Mojares, writing was a way of knowing, of making sense of a place, its people, and the histories that shape them.

Through his books, essays, journalism, criticism, and teaching, Dr. Mojares brought Cebu and the Visayas into sharper focus within Philippine intellectual life. His scholarship affirmed that our local histories, literature, culture, and memories are not peripheral to the Philippine story, they are essential to understanding it.

UP Cebu remembers Dr. Mojares not only for the remarkable body of work he left behind, but for the intellectual life he helped cultivate. He inspired generations of students, writers, and scholars to look closely at the places and communities that shape who we are.

His legacy reminds us that scholarship can be a form of service to place, to people, and to the continuing work of understanding ourselves.

HAZE ALERT

As of September 1, 2026 (Tuesday), Cebu’s Air Quality Index (AQI) is 152, indicating unhealthy air quality. The UP Cebu community is advised to take precautions to reduce exposure to haze and harmful particles.

To protect your health:
​- Stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed when possible.
​- Avoid outdoor activities, especially jogging and strenuous work, to reduce inhalation of harmful particles.
​- Wear a mask if going outside and use goggles or glasses to help prevent irritation from ash particles.
​- Monitor your health and watch for symptoms such as coughing, irritated eyes, or shortness of breath.
​- Stay hydrated and seek medical attention if you experience persistent or worsening symptoms.

Hazy conditions are currently being observed in Cebu due to smoke from the forest fire in Kalimantan, Indonesia.
