LOOK 👀| Vegetable Foresight Team facilitates backcasting workshop in CALABARZON

Stakeholders from across the agriculture sector including local farmers, LGU representatives, private industry partners, and academe experts gathered at CPAf on July 30, 2026, for an engaging backcasting workshop .

Organized under the DOST PCAARRD-funded initiative "Harvesting Tomorrow: Envisioning the Futures of the Luzon Semi-Temperate Vegetable Industry by 2050 through Strategic Foresight" , the event brought together key regional voices to chart a long-term roadmap.

Led by the CSPPS project team, participants took part in a dynamic, gamified session designed to map out actionable milestones backward from 2050 . By connecting visionary goals to current local agricultural realities, the workshop spurred insightful discussions and forged a shared commitment to building a sustainable, resilient vegetable sector for Luzon 🚜✨.

| Associate Professor Christopher C. Mantillas, PhD represented CPAf-IGRD at the 2026 World Community Development Conference at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, United Kingdom.

With 415 delegates from around the world, Dr. Mantillas presented his research with the working title "Transition Communities: Exploring the Rise of Potential Metropolises in Selected Areas of CALABARZON Philippines and its Implications to Local Communities."

He also took part in the two-day Practice Exchange Program in the Scottish Highlands, where he learned from several community development programs such as Alternatives Dumbarton West, Skylark-Maritime Museum (cultural preservation), with its partner, the Perfect Blend Cafe, Phoenix Center (community hub model), Knowetop Project (community horticulture and conservation) and the Scottish Crannog Centre (Open Air Living Museum in Loch Tay in Pertshire).

CPAf is proud to see its faculty contribute to global conversations on building communities that grow with and for their people.

"Magna Carta of Women (MCW) is a comprehensive women’s human rights law that seeks to eliminate discrimination through the recognition, protection, fulfillment, and promotion of the rights of Filipino women, especially those belonging to the marginalized sectors of society (PCW).”

In CPAf, one of its project DIP Lab engages communities in the policy formulation process through participatory and inclusive approaches that ensure the voices, perspectives, and needs of all community members—including women—are considered in developing evidence-informed policies.

Delegates from the UPLB College of Public Affairs and Development (CPAf) visited Cebu City on August 3-4, 2026 to strengthen collaboration and partnership with its co-convenor, the UP Cebu College of Social Sciences (CSS), and engage local stakeholders in preparation for the 5th International Conference on Governance and Development (ICGD5) happening in July 2027.

Following the announcement from Malacañang through the Presidential Communications Office, classes in UPLB shall shift to online mode (asynchronous or synchronous) today, 4 September 2026.

Classes with scheduled activities (exams, laboratory work, clinical rotation, etc.) shall coordinate with the faculty-in-charge.

Smarter pest control, stronger mango farms🥭

A new -supported research project is working in two of the world's leading mango-producing countries, Indonesia and the Philippines, to better understand what drives pest and disease management decisions in mango production. 🇮🇩 🇵🇭

Working with farmers, researchers, governments and industry partners, the project will build on earlier ACIAR investments to identify practical ways to expand the use of proven approaches that reduce unnecessary pesticide use, improve food safety and support stronger mango industries.

Led by The University of Queensland, the 4.5-year, A$5.8 million project is co-funded by ACIAR and DOST PCAARRD. Bringing together agricultural science, behavioural research, economics and policy, it aims to support lasting change for farmers, communities and the mango sector.

| Charting the Way Forward for Small Lake Governance: Go LAKE Lab Holds Inception Meeting

The Go LAKE Lab project successfully held its inception meeting on August 27, 2026, bringing together the project team, representatives from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) and the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), and invited external evaluators and resource persons.

Implemented by the Community Innovations Studies Center of the UPLB College of Public Affairs and Development (CISC-CPAf) and funded by DOST-PCAARRD, the project titled “Establishment of Governance Leadership, Advocacy for Knowledge Enhancement Laboratory (Go LAKE Lab) for Small Lakes” aims to establish a collaborative, science-based capacity-building and data innovation platform that strengthens the governance, management, and sustainable development of small lakes in the Philippines through digital tools, expert engagement, and integrated lake basin management approaches.
