The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) successfully held its Recognition Ceremony on March 24, 2026 at the UP Mindanao Atrium, honoring the University and College Scholars for their academic excellence, dedication, and perseverance.

The event was highlighted by the presence of Atty. Julius Voltaire Villanueva, BA Communication Arts (2013) alumnus, who served as the guest speaker. In his message, he shared his journey as a former UP Mindanao student and his experiences beyond the University, offering reflections on growth, purpose, and resilience.
His inspiring words encouraged the scholars to embrace both achievements and setbacks as part of their journey, and to continue striving not only for personal success but also for meaningful contributions to society.

What we build as a community doesn’t come from a single voice—it comes from the many pieces of stories, efforts, and struggles we carry. Together, we create something bigger, a movement rooted in knowledge, driven by purpose, and fueled by the desire to be heard.

But a movement cannot thrive when its foundation is constantly being weakened.

"Ang aklat ay binubuo ng labing-isang kuwento na umiinog ang naratibo sa iba-ibang lugar sa Mindanaw na kadalasan ay sa lungsod ng Davao. Nakaugnay ang bawat kuwento sa mga kayarian at kabatirang nakaangkla sa konstelasyon ng kaalamang-bayan, araling Mindanaw at Sulu, at politika. Ang mga piyesa sa aklat ay masasabing bunga ng halos isang dekadang pananaliksik at pamamalagi sa isla rehiyon at karatig na arkipelago ng Mindanaw at Sulu. Kalakip ng mga kuwento sa aklat ang hinaharayang kasaysayan ng emosyon na nagtatampok sa patuloy na armadong pakikibaka sa kabukiran, oral na tradisyon ng mga Tausug, politika ng mga makapangyarihang balyan, naratibo ng extra-judicial killings, mga natapos at hindi natapos na pagnanasa, at pag-aasam sa panlipunang katarungan ng makapangyarihang tanod ng Bundok Apo. Congratulations and thank you to our University Research Associate Marie Grace Aponte for 10 years of service to UP Mindanao! Yet it is no secret that she has actually so far served a total of 17 years, because she was with the Cash and Budget Offices from 2000-2007 before she left UP Mindanao to work abroad, returning in 2015 through the Office of Research.

In the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, we have been blessed to have her since November 2017, where her exemplary work ethic and strong moral compass serve as an inspiration to all of us.
