HCDC Students Explore the “Home of the Bright, Land of the Brave”

During the fourth day of the outbound academic and cultural exchange program of the Holy Cross of Davao College in Malaysia, October 22, 2026, the 27 student delegates deep dived into the rich history, cultural heritage, biodiversity, and global engagement initiatives of the Universiti Malaya (UM).

The delegation explored UM’s Visionary Journey, an exhibit highlighting the university’s contributions to education, culture, and nation building. The students learned about Malaysian cultural icons, the role of Universiti Malaya Press in academic publishing, and the historical significance of Dewan Tunku Canselor. They also discovered Rimba Ilmu, UM’s botanical garden, which houses more than 1,600 plant species, including rare plants.

The students also visited the UM Art Gallery, where they explored artworks and memorabilia reflecting the university’s history and Malaysia’s artistic and cultural heritage. The visit provided insights into the development of regional art, the influence of royal patronage, and the role of art in preserving historical narratives and cultural identity.

Another highlight was meeting the Ambassador of the Philippines to Malaysia, H.E. Maria Angela A. Ponce, at Dewan Tunku Canselor during HELCA 2026. The delegation also visited the Mobility Fair, where international participants showcased their cultures and educational experiences, promoting intercultural understanding, knowledge sharing, and global connections.

This mobility program of HCDC, through its Center for Internationalization and in collaboration with Universiti Malaya’s Voyage of Intercultural Bonding and Exchange (VIBE) program, directly contributes to the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through experiential learning and knowledge sharing, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through cultural heritage appreciation and preservation, SDG 15 (Life on Land) through biodiversity awareness and conservation, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through international collaboration and cultural exchange.

HCDC Joins SEAMEO - Southeast Asian Conference on Pre-Service Teacher Education

On October 20–21, 2026, in Manila, Philippines, the delegation of the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) participated in the SEA-Teacher Program Evaluation and the Southeast Asia Conference on Pre-Service Teacher Education.

Representing the institution were the Dean of the School of Teacher Education (STE), Melissa Jose, EdD; STE Focal Person for Internationalization, Ms. Kathy Ponferrada; and the Head of the Center for Internationalization and Concurrent Head of the Institute of ASEAN-European Studies, Ms. Sheryl J. Urdaneta.

Organized by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Secretariat, the gathering brought together teacher education leaders, institutional representatives, practitioners, and development partners to discuss strategies for strengthening pre-service teacher education across Southeast Asia. The event was hosted by Philippine Normal University (PNU) Manila, in collaboration with REX Education and the Philippine Teacher Education Council (TEC), as part of SEAMEO’s 60th anniversary celebration.

The conference provided an avenue for educational leaders and teacher education institutions to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and explore innovative approaches to pre-service teacher preparation. It emphasized the importance of experiential learning, cross-cultural engagement, and international collaboration in equipping future educators with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to respond to the evolving demands of education in Southeast Asia.

HCDC’s participation reflects the institution’s continuing commitment to international academic engagement, regional cooperation, and the advancement of quality teacher education. Through this engagement, the college strengthens professional networks and gains insights that can inform its teacher education initiatives and future international collaborations.

The initiative supports three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4: Quality Education, by advancing quality teacher preparation; SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, by promoting inclusive and equitable access to professional learning and international academic opportunities; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by strengthening international cooperation and institutional collaboration in teacher education.

Through its Center for Internationalization, HCDC continues to pursue meaningful regional and global partnerships that help develop competent, culturally responsive, and future-ready educators in the Philippines and beyond.

HCDC delegates immerse into environmental conservation and cultural workshops at Universiti Malaya

The 27 student delegates of Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) who are in Malaysia for their outbound mobility at Universiti Malaya (UM) continued their academic and cultural exchange focusing on environmental conservation, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

Marking the third day of the program, October 21, the delegates collaborated with UM student buddies and the Universiti Malaya Sustainable Development Centre (UMSDC) through hands-on environmental activities and cultural workshops.

The day began at Varsity Lake with kayaking and fish feeding, followed by an orientation on the lake’s history, ecological challenges, and restoration efforts led by the UM Water Warriors. Facilitated by Mr. Muhammad Daniel Md Lazim, Research Assistant, the session featured insights from Ms. Siti Norasiah Abd Kadir, Assistant Registrar, and UMSDC representatives Mr. Sanjeef Kumar Subramaniam, Research Assistant, and Mr. Mohd Fadhli Rahmat Fakri, Research Officer.

Delegates then conducted spatial mapping to identify water sources, biodiversity, human activity areas, and environmental concerns. They also joined a greenfield scavenger hunt and a cleanup drive around Varsity Lake, practicing proper waste segregation by separating recyclable and non recyclable materials.

In the afternoon, students joined UM buddies for traditional Malayan and Bornean dance rehearsals, Batik wax resist canvas painting, and henna art, promoting cultural appreciation and intercultural learning.

The activities supported SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through environmental awareness, biodiversity conservation, sustainable campus practices, and international collaboration.

Through this mobility program, HCDC continues to strengthen its partnership with Universiti Malaya, through the Center for Internationalization, while providing students with meaningful opportunities for global learning, environmental responsibility, and cultural exchange.
