REPOST:
St. Vincent’s College Incorporated and the Philippine Red Cross-Zamboanga del Norte Chapter jointly launched a photo exhibit last August 19, 2019 at the SVCI New Building Lobby to mark the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Month.
With the theme “Protecting the defenseless in times of armed conflict,” the exhibit also promoted the seven fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. These principles are: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality.
Moreover, the activity complies with the first pillar of the JEEPGY program. SVCI implements JEEPGY as a partner institution of the Catholic Education Association of the Philippines (CEAP). The JEEPGY pillars are: Justice and Peace; Ecological Integrity; Engaged Citizenship; Poverty Reduction; Gender Equality; and Youth Empowerment. These pillars are included as themes in the entire school culture including policies, researches, campus practices and curricula aimed towards transformative education.
Sources added the IHL Office of the Red Cross disseminates the basics on the IHL and advocates domestic legislation and measures to implement provisions of the Geneva Conventions. In the Philippines, this resulted to the passage of Republic Act 9851 or the 2009 Philippine Act on Crimes Against International Humanitarian Law, Genocide and Other Crimes Against Humanity.
SVCI President Rev. Fr. Nathaniele A. Denlaoso, Citi Mall Supervisor Maria Zabeth T. Tan, Dipolog Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President Mandel Zoe Lugasan and Dr. Joseph G. Refugio (in photo) cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the exhibit. Also in attendance were SVCI students, faculty and Red Cross representatives. Vincent Lanz Sigasig and Jolina Mencias of SVCI Senior High hosted the event.
