AMSC joins Multi-Stakeholder Consultation for Lake Lanao Endemic Fish Conservation

Marawi City, Lanao del Sur | MAY 13, 2026- In a concerted effort to preserve the biological and cultural heritage of Lanao del Sur, representatives from Adiong Memorial State College (AMSC), Sir Jahirun Mungkon and Research Assistant Jabber Gumaga from AMSC College of Fisheries jointly with RA Ma'am Omaidah Adiong participated in the high-level Multi-Stakeholder Community Consultation held at the Provincial Social Hall, Provincial Capitol Complex yesterday.

The event focused on Project 6, titled "Sociocultural and Economic Dimensions of Resource Conservation and Management of Endemic Cyprinids in Lake Lanao". This initiative, supported by Mindanao State University, the Province of Lanao del Sur, and the DOST-PCAARRD, aims to address the dwindling populations of endemic fish species—specifically cyprinids—which have long been a staple of the local diet and economy.

The morning session featured a series of insightful messages from regional leaders. Forester Pili M. Papandayan (PENRO) and Dr. Annie Mae C. Berowa (Vice Chancellor for Research, MSU) emphasized the critical need for collaborative research. The Province of Lanao del Sur expressed its unwavering support for the project, highlighting that the conservation of Lake Lanao is not just an environmental issue, but a matter of food security and cultural identity for the Maranao people.

Following the messages, the technical analysis of the lake's ecosystem was presented through PESTLE findings by Prof. Norjannah Abantas-Manalocon, which examined the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental factors impacting resource management.

During the technical segment, Program Leader Dr. Ma-Ann M. Camarin and Project 6 Leader Dr. Annie Rose C. Cadeliña provided a comprehensive overview of the research framework. A significant portion of the day was dedicated to the presentation of PESTLE analysis findings, which examined the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental factors impacting the lake's ecosystem.

The consultation moved from theory to practice with a collaborative workshop session. Dr. Nimfa L. Bracamonte facilitated a detailed SWOT Analysis, allowing representatives from Adiong Memorial State College and other stakeholders to identify the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats regarding current conservation strategies for endemic cyprinids.

Accordingly, the conservation of Lake Lanao's endemic cyprinids requires more than just scientific data; it requires the collective will of the community and the dedication of our educational institutions.

Hosted by Sir Mark H. Andrino, LPT, the day concluded with a decisive call to action as stakeholders and partner agencies participated in a formal Pledge of Commitment signing. This ceremonial act reaffirmed the dedication of all involved parties to implementing the specific recommendations and research frameworks developed during the workshop followed by a ceremonial giving of certificates and a group photo session.

AMSC empowers Lanao del Sur women Through "Flavors of Heritage" Culinary Workshop

Brgy. Bagoaingud, Ditsaan- Ramain, LDS — In a significant move toward community development and economic resilience, Adiong Memorial State College (AMSC) hosted a full-day workshop titled "Flavors of Heritage: Workshop on Value-Added Tilapia, Beef, and Sakorab Formulation" on May 8, 2026 in connection with MinSuPala IRDC Phase III project.

Held at the AMSC Science Lecture Hall, the event brought together fifty (50) wives of local fisherfolks and farmers to master innovative food processing techniques designed to elevate traditional Maranao culinary staples into marketable commodities.

The initiative, led by the college’s socio-cultural and research teams, focused on the intersection of cultural identity and sustainable livelihoods. Central to the workshop was Sakorab (palapa), a vital Maranao condiment. By integrating scientific research with local knowledge, the program aimed to validate indigenous practices while introducing modern standards for food preservation and packaging.

The morning session, led by resource person Prof. Jamal A. Monte, LPT, provided participants with an overview of Tilapia and Palapa processing. This was followed by intensive hands-on demonstrations where attendees learned specific techniques for drying and smoking tilapia, as well as the meticulous preparation of Sakorab.

The afternoon sessions shifted focus toward the commercial viability of these products. Discussions led by experts covered the nutritional value of tilapia and Palapa, alongside critical training on food safety standards. Participants were also instructed on packaging techniques intended to enhance the marketability of their products beyond local borders.

According to the program objectives, this training is strategically aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By empowering the wives of fisherfolk and farmers, the initiative promotes gender equality and provides families with the tools to maximize the economic value of their raw resources.

The event concluded with a "Workshop Output Presentation," where participants showcased their processed Tilapia and Palapa mixes to AMSC administration and staff. The success of the workshop highlights the evolving role of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) as catalysts for field-based applications of academic research.

"This initiative moves beyond mere technical instruction to address the deeper intersections of identity, equity, and sustainable livelihood," the program documentation noted, emphasizing that the project was designed to protect the region's heritage while securing its economic future.

As Lanao del Sur continues to seek sustainable innovations, the "Flavors of Heritage" workshop stands as a definitive model for how community-driven culinary education can foster long-term resilience and pride.

AMSC hosts Landmark Seminar on Decolonizing Research and Publications with Dr. Nassef Adiong

Brgy. Bagoaingud, Ditsaan- Ramain, Lanao del Sur — Adiong Memorial State College (AMSC) held a significant academic event titled “Decolonizing Research and Publications” on May 6, 2026, at the AMSC Science Lecture Hall, as hosted by Prof. Sherifa Ainee O. Kadil, the AMSC Board Secretary.

The seminar featured Dr. Nassef Manabilang Adiong, the Director of Policy Research and Legal Services (PRLS) of the Bangsamoro Parliament, as the distinguished resource speaker.

The event aimed to challenge traditional Western-centric academic practices and encourage scholarship that is inclusive, culturally grounded, and responsive to the lived realities of local communities.

In her welcome message, AMSC President Dr. Sherifa Rohanni K. Adiong emphasized the urgency of making research applicable to the community of Lanao del Sur. She noted that scholarship must go beyond fulfilling academic requirements to address critical issues such as the low literacy rates in the BARMM region, which data shows are among the lowest in the country.

"We have to learn research that is needed by our community," she stated, urging graduate students and faculty to produce work that is implementable and impactful.

Dr. Rashida A. Abedin, Vice President for Academic and Finance, provided the rationale for the activity, explaining that decolonizing research involves a shift from Western academic centers to localized contexts. She stressed that while research should align with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it must remain meaningful and accessible to the people it serves.

During the keynote session, Dr. Nassef Adiong discussed the historical and conceptual boundaries created by Western modernity. He highlighted how knowledge production is often dominated by Western influence, which frequently marginalizes non-European philosophy and history.

Dr. Adiong pointed out that major historical contributions from Muslim civilizations—such as the establishment of the world's first university by Fatima al-Fihri and advancements in surgery and engineering—are often overlooked in traditional textbooks. He advocated for the use of indigenous methodologies and community-centric research designs to "free" Islamic and Bangsamoro studies from external dominance.

The event was unique in its format, adopting a "podcast-style" conversation to facilitate a more natural and engaging flow of ideas between the speaker and the audience.

The discussion was divided into four key segments, to wit: 1.) Understanding decolonization in the Philippine context; 2.) Integrating research with identity and local knowledge; 3.) Decolonizing academic publication practices; and 4.) Practical advice for emerging researchers on choosing meaningful, publishable topics.

Dr. Alliah A. Pandapatan, Director of the Research and Innovation Unit, noted that the event served as a space to rethink how knowledge is produced and shared, ensuring that local voices and experiences are accurately represented.

The seminar concluded with an open forum where participants discussed the challenges of publishing in international journals like Scopus and the need for a national indexing system that recognizes local scholarship. The event serves as a stepping stone for AMSC’s goal to become a hub for transformative education within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The program ended with closing remarks from Prof. Luis Siddick Adiong, Director of the Department of Student Affairs, followed by a photo opportunity and informal networking among the faculty, staff, and students.

Manila, Philippines — In a landmark move for regional education, the Philippine Normal University (PNU) and Adiong Memorial State College (AMSC) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 5, 2026.

This partnership is set to be a transformative milestone for faculty development and teacher education within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The agreement was signed by PNU President Dr. Bert Jazmin Tuga and AMSC President Dr. Sherifa Rohannie Kadil Adiong, who was accompanied by her administrative team. As the specialized state university recognized by law as the National Center for Teacher Education, PNU will leverage its expertise to provide AMSC with high-level technical assistance. Based at its historic campus on Taft Avenue, Manila, PNU is positioned to mentor AMSC faculty through tailored capacity-building programs.

The MOU outlines a multi-faceted approach to educational reform: first, Faculty Empowerment- these would be comprehensive programs to equip AMSC faculty with modern pedagogical tools and advanced instructional strategies; second, Extension Services which are those collaborative support programs specifically designed for basic education teachers within the AMSC locality, extending the impact beyond the college walls; third then, is the Quality Assurance which would be the establishment of rigorous monitoring and assessment frameworks to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of educational programs; and lastly, Academic Advancement which is the continuous furtherance of teacher education standards to meet 21st-century demands.

The strategic alliance is more than just a formal agreement; it is a commitment to the future of the Bangsamoro people. By ensuring that educators in the region are trained by the nation’s premier teacher-training institution, the partnership is expected to create a "ripple effect" of improved learning outcomes for students across BARMM.
