Parenting is more than simply correcting a child when they do something wrong. In human development, discipline refers to the ways parents help children develop self-control, understand boundaries, and learn behaviors that are acceptable in society.
Discipline can involve punishment, but it can also include reinforcing good behavior, explaining consequences, setting limits, and helping children understand how their actions affect others.
Here are five common forms of discipline discussed in developmental psychology:

โTeach them what to doโnot just what not to do.โ
Reinforcement strengthens a behavior by following it with something rewarding. This can be tangible, such as treats or extra playtime, or intangible, such as praise, affection, or privileges.
Punishment, on the other hand, is used to decrease an undesirable behavior. When necessary, it is generally more effective when it is immediate, consistent, calmly delivered, clearly connected to the behavior, and accompanied by an explanation of what the child should do instead.
Example:
A child regularly leaves their toys on the floor. Instead of only scolding them, their parent praises them whenever they put their toys away: โThank you for cleaning up after yourself!โ
Over time, the child may begin to experience an internal sense of accomplishment from keeping things organized.

โDiscipline should teachโnot hurt.โ
Corporal punishment refers to using physical force to correct or control a childโs behavior, such as spanking, hitting, slapping, pinching, or shaking.
Although physical punishment has historically been used in many families and cultures, research has associated corporal punishment with a range of negative outcomes, including increased aggression and externalizing behavior, poorer parent-child relationships, and difficulties with internalizing moral lessons.
Example:
A child breaks a household rule, and the parent responds by spanking them.
The punishment may stop the behavior temporarily, but it does not necessarily help the child understand why the behavior was wrong or what they should do differently next time.
This is why developmental researchers have increasingly emphasized non-physical approaches to discipline.

โHelp them understand the impact of their actions.โ
Inductive techniques involve explaining rules, setting limits, discussing consequences, encouraging empathy, and helping children understand how their actions affect other people.
Instead of simply saying, โThatโs wrong,โ parents help children understand why it is wrong.
Example:
A child takes something from a store without paying. Instead of immediately spanking or humiliating the child, the parent explains how taking the item affects the store owner. The parent asks, โHow would you feel if someone took something that belonged to you?โ
The child is then encouraged to return the item and understand the consequences of their action.
Through this process, children can begin to develop empathy and understand moral principles rather than simply obeying because they are afraid of punishment.

โBecause I said so.โ
Power assertion involves using parental authority to stop or discourage undesirable behavior. It may include demands, threats, withdrawal of privileges, spanking, or other forms of punishment.
Example:
A teenager repeatedly ignores a household rule about coming home on time. Their parent responds by saying, โYouโre grounded for a week. No going out with your friends.โ
The immediate goal is to stop the behavior through parental control.
Power assertion can sometimes establish clear boundaries, especially when safety is involved, but relying heavily on coercive methods may not help children develop an internal understanding of why a behavior is appropriate or inappropriate.

โLove shouldnโt feel like something you have to earn.โ
Withdrawal of love involves responding to misbehavior by temporarily ignoring, isolating, rejecting, or expressing dislike toward the child.
Example:
After their child receives a poor grade, a parent refuses to talk to them and says, โIโm disappointed in you. Donโt talk to me.โ
The child may become afraid of losing the parentโs affection rather than understanding what they can do differently.
Research has associated psychological control tactics such as love withdrawal and shaming with negative outcomes in some children. However, responses to discipline can also vary depending on cultural context and the childโs individual characteristics.

Discipline is not simply about making children obey. It is also about helping them learn self-control, responsibility, empathy, and acceptable ways of behaving. The way a parent responds to misbehavior can influence how a child understands rules and relationships. Effective discipline does not only communicate, โDonโt do that.โ It also helps answer, โWhat should I do instead, and why does it matter?โ
Children also differ in temperament and may respond differently to the same disciplinary approach. This means that parenting cannot always be reduced to one technique that works for every child or situation.
๐ก๐๐ข๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ ๐๐ง๐จ๐ฐ?
Research suggests that harsh parenting and child behavior can influence each other. A child who frequently displays difficult behavior may elicit more coercive responses from parents, while harsh or coercive parenting can, in turn, contribute to more behavior problems.
This can create a cycle:
Misbehavior โ harsh response โ more negative behavior โ harsher response
Breaking this cycle may involve responding calmly, reinforcing appropriate behavior, setting clear boundaries, and helping children understand the effects of their actions. Ultimately, discipline is not just about correcting behaviorโit is about teaching children how to eventually guide their own behavior.
