STATEMENT ON RECENT ISSUES REGARDING ANIMAL CRUELTY
There has recently been multiple incidents where some of the youth have committed an act of violence against animals. The SUSG Advocacy Committee strongly condemns this act. Such behavior reflects a profound disregard for animal welfare and undermines the values of empathy, respect, and responsibility that we strive to uphold. Animal cruelty is not only a morally unacceptable act but a serious offence under Philippine law.
Animal cruelty is not only morally reprehensible but also punishable under Philippine law. Under Republic Act No. 8485, or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, as amended by Republic Act No. 10631, any person who subjects an animal to cruelty, maltreatment, or neglect shall be held accountable. Penalties may include imprisonment ranging from six months to three years, fines of up to ₱250,000 or both.
This legislation affirms that animals, as sentient and living beings, and are entitled to humane treatment and protection. Any act of harm toward animals, whether domesticated, stray, or wildlife, runs counter to these principles and is strictly unacceptable. Beyond its immediate impact, cruelty toward animals raises serious concerns about the erosion of empathy, which is fundamental to a just and humane society.
The SUSG Advocacy Committee remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding animal welfaree, actively advancing efforts such as partnerships with animal shelters, and initiatives that promote humane treatment and protection of all animals. In line with this, we strongly encourage all Sillimanians to actively embody and uphold these values in their daily lives, and take a part in preventing harm, and speaking out against any harmful acts.
