The grief we carry has its own gravity, and it has pulled us down in ways words can barely describe. Yet in our search for justice and truth, may we stand together—united in purpose and in heart. As one MSU community and as one family of Fishkolars, we invite everyone to gather for a candle-lighting ceremony on 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 10, 2025 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐅𝐀𝐒 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 at 5pm onwards, in honor of our friend and sister, 𝐌𝐢𝐲𝐮𝐤𝐢 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝐊𝐢𝐦, a 4th-year BS Fisheries student who tragically lost her life last December 8, 2025.

Let us come together to pray for the eternal rest of her soul and to offer strength to one another during this difficult time. Everyone is welcome. Please wear 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 as we commemorate her life and her memory. You may also bring a flower as an offering of love, respect, and solidarity.

The activity will take place on 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯–𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, with 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲-𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 scheduled for both days. 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗙𝗔𝗦 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼-𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺 while 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 (𝗥𝗦𝗥𝗖). 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘴... 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺'𝘳𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦!

Did you know that 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬? These ocean wonders belong to the phylum 𝐂𝐧𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚, making them close relatives of jellyfish and sea anemones.

Each coral is made up of tiny organisms called 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐩𝐬. They work together to create calcium carbonate skeletons that, over time, form coral reefs that become home to countless marine species.

What makes corals even more amazing is their partnership with microscopic algae called 𝐳𝐨𝐨𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐞. These algae live inside coral tissues, giving them their vibrant colors and providing food through photosynthesis.

Here in the Philippines, we’re blessed with an estimated 𝟐𝟔,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐟𝐬, the second largest reef area in Southeast Asia. The country also hosts over 500 species of stony corals (𝐒𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬), including 12 found 𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡.

But these colorful communities are under threat. 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞, 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬, and 𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 are putting corals at risk, making the protection of these underwater architects more crucial than ever.

The 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬’ 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 invites all Marine Biology constituents to a meaningful and inspiring seminar this 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟮𝟔, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟓, 𝟏:𝟬𝟎 𝐩𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝟓:𝟎𝟎 𝐩𝐦, at the 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬 (𝐎𝐒𝐀) — 𝐋𝐨𝐛𝐛𝐲, as we explore the diverse journeys of these motivators who have built fulfilling careers in public environmental work.

This project, “𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬: 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐢 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝗪𝐨𝐫𝐤,” brings together Gary John B. Cabinta and Cirilo A. Lagnason, who will share their personal experiences navigating the world of environmental service. Through their stories, they will highlight the importance of developing one’s skills, engaging in sustainable initiatives, and understanding the role that marine biologists play in conservation and community-centered environmental efforts.

𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃 𝐅𝐈𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒 𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓

World Fisheries Day provides an important opportunity to recognize the critical role of the fisheries sector in sustaining food security, economic development, and community resilience—particularly in the Philippines, a nation whose identity and survival are deeply intertwined with its marine and aquatic resources.

The Philippines relies extensively on fisheries as a primary source of nutrition and livelihood. Coastal and fisheries-dependent communities continue to depend on the sector as a central economic activity, with 2.29 million Filipinos directly or indirectly employed in capture fisheries, aquaculture, post-harvest processing, packaging, and transport (BFAR 2024). Although the specific contribution of fisheries to the national gross domestic product (GDP) is not independently reported, the collective agriculture, forestry, and fishing sectors contributed 8.6% to the country’s GDP in 2023, underscoring the sector’s significance to national development.

However, the continued productivity of the country’s aquatic ecosystems requires sustained protection and responsible stewardship. Upholding the balance and health of our marine ecosystems is essential not only for present needs but also for the long-term resilience of the Filipino people.

Ensuring a protected, productive, and sustainable ocean is, ultimately, ensuring the future of the nation itself.

𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | To empower and amplify young and aspiring marine scientists, the Marine Biology Students’ Society (MBSS) of the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Mindanao State University-General Santos, conducted the seminar "Yaman ng Karagatan, Yaman ng Buhay: Intro to SBPS” at the college’s Audio-Visual Room, October 29.

Gracing the event was Ms. Angeline Kia P. Ondoy, a passionate environmental advocate and proud alumna of the department. She currently serves under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Protected Area Management Office (DENR-PAMO) for the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS).
During her talk, Ms. Ondoy discussed the practices and management systems within the SBPS, its ecological significance, economic importance, and the history of its establishment.

Encouraging the students to take an active role in environmental efforts, she reminded them that involvement, no matter how small, contributes to a larger cause.

“Do not limit yourselves. Engage, join any organization, volunteer, make it your training ground. At least you have contributed something. If we continue doing what we are doing, we not only protect the environment, but we also protect the future.”

The seminar allowed participants to dive deeper into the wonders of the SBPS. Anchored in its goal of nurturing future stewards of the sea, the program aimed to equip students with the knowledge and awareness necessary to inspire action and advocacy for marine conservation, deepening their understanding and encouraging them to pursue meaningful involvement in protecting marine and coastal ecosystems.

𝐌𝐁𝐒𝐒 | 𝐈𝐍 𝐒𝐁𝐏𝐒

The “Yaman ng Karagatan, Yaman ng Buhay: Introduction to the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape” seminar provided Marine Biology students with a clearer view of the ecosystem that lies at the center of their academic and professional studies. Held at the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Audio-Visual Room, the seminar aimed to help students understand what it means to study Marine Biology within the context of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS). While the field of marine biology extends beyond this local seascape, the seminar emphasized how fortunate the students are to study in close proximity to one of the country’s most biologically significant marine areas.

The discussion illuminated the intricate balance within SBPS—how its thriving state is a testament to the collective effort behind its protection. Students were reminded that the ecology of the bay continuously strives for equilibrium, a delicate pursuit of preserving biodiversity while sustaining the livelihood of communities that depend on its resources. The seminar painted a vivid picture of coexistence: protecting species while empowering people, ensuring that both can flourish in harmony.

The seminar also underscored the important role of research and academic work in guiding conservation efforts. Students were encouraged to apply their knowledge to real-world situations, to share scientific information with the public, and to contribute to evidence-based management practices that can strengthen marine protection.

𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿, 𝗠𝘀. 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗮 𝗣. 𝗢𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘆, a proud Marine Biology Alumna (Class of 2024) and now part of the DENR–Protected Area Management Office of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape, shared her insights as an Information Officer Designate and CEPA Focal Person. She also encouraged students to take every opportunity to participate in environmental initiatives and reminded them that even small actions contribute to long-term change. Her message served as a motivation to continue pursuing environmental work with persistence and purpose.

The seminar concluded not just as a session of learning, but as a reaffirmation of purpose—reminding every Marine Biology student that within the ebb and flow of their academic journey lies a deeper calling: to safeguard the ocean that sustains life itself.

The Marine Biology Students’ Society sets sail with “ 𝗬𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻, 𝗬𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝘂𝗵𝗮𝘆: 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗕𝗣𝗦” Seminar, to be held at the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Audio-Visual Room on October 29, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This voyage of learning invites every Marine Biology constituent to dive deeper into the wonders of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS)—a vital ecosystem that serves as both our classroom and our calling.

Anchored in the goal of nurturing future stewards of the sea, the program seeks to equip students with knowledge and awareness that inspire action and advocacy for marine life. Gracing this endeavor, 𝗮 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗕𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 will lead us through an enlightening exploration of the bay—our living laboratory, and the beating heart of our mission to protect the ocean’s treasures.

Recognizing the paramount role of education in hybrid peace formation, whilst mainstreaming the IP Communities, 𝐋𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐠 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐝 𝟑.𝟎: 𝐀𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐭 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 sets sail once more with its steadfast mission, that is, to champion education as a vessel for peace and empowerment, especially among marginalized communities.

Anchored in this cause, 𝐋𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐠 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐝 𝟑.𝟎 extends its support to the IP Children of 𝐁𝐫𝐠𝐲. 𝐙𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐦, 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢, distributing essential school supplies such as tumblers,bags, notebooks, papers, and more.

The program will commence on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at 𝐁𝐫𝐠𝐲. 𝐙𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐦, 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢. This initiative stands as a testament to collective action and collaboration among various organizations and stakeholders.
