Join the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology Department of History, BCPCH - Lanao del Sur (Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage-Lanao del Sur), and the Asymmetric MIA Accounting Group (AMAG) for a profound conversation on memory, survival, and the enduring spirit of Mindanao.

Following our recent milestone regarding the transfer of historical documents and tangible resources from the 𝐆𝐮𝐲 𝐎. 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 to MSU-IIT, we are honored to present a special live panel interview with 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻𝘀.

Now 96 years old, Mr. Hagans offers a unique perspective as a "𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙤 𝘽𝙤𝙮" who grew up in the region during the 1930s. His journey from civilian life to becoming a Prisoner of War (POW) during WWII—including his time held at Camp Keithley—is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Accompanying Mr. Hagans will be a panel of Mindanao historians to discuss the broader historical significance of his experiences and the shared history of the region.

𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫:

𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗟𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮 is a Filipina independent filmmaker and professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI). She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Film Production from New York University. She is a recipient of the Fulbright-Hays Scholarship, the New York Asian Cultural Council Fellowship, the NYU Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Fellowship, and the prestigious 13 Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Dalena is recognized as one of the pioneers of Filipino alternative cinema. Her filmography includes Asong Simbahan (1994), Mumunting Krus (1995), and the experimental dance film White Funeral (1998), all of which received recognition from the Gawad URIAN and the Gawad CCP para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video.

Her films have been screened in numerous local and international film festivals. Among her notable works are Rigodon (2006), Memories of a Forgotten War (2001), Ka Oryang (2011), Ishma (2012), Himala Ngayon (2012), The Guerrilla is a Poet (2013), Ang Kababaihan ng Malolos (2014), Dahling Nick (2015), and History of the Underground (2017). Her latest film, Cinemartyrs, received the Best Direction Award, Best Musical Score, and Special Jury Prize at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.

Dalena has participated in international film festivals and creative laboratories such as Annecy, Berlinale, Locarno, Oberhausen, Busan, BIFAN, and the Full Circle Project Labs. Her works have also been screened and exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian Institution, Lincoln Center, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

She was honored as one of the Film Luminaries for Independent Cinema during Sine Sandaan: The Centennial of Philippine Cinema and is also a recipient of the UP Artist Award and the Excellence in Teaching Award for UP CMC Faculty.

Currently, the UP Film Institute is holding the multi-site retrospective Counter-Archives of a Film Guerrera: A Retrospective of Sari Dalena’s Cinema, celebrating more than 30 years of her work in documentary, hybrid, and experimental filmmaking.

Students of the Bachelor of Arts in History program of MSU-IIT recently had a meaningful encounter with award-winning filmmaker 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗟𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮, director of the documentary film 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘆𝗿𝘀, as part of the ongoing film screening series organized by the Department of History.

Beyond the screening itself, BA History majors were given the rare opportunity to engage directly with the director in an open forum, where discussions delved into the social realities and historical forces that shaped the film's production. The conversation explored how Cinemartyrs captures and reflects on critical moments in Philippine history — and why such stories remain deeply relevant to the study of history today.

The exchange proved to be an enriching academic experience, bridging the world of documentary filmmaking with historical inquiry and encouraging students to think critically about how history is told, documented, and remembered through film.

𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐠𝐞: 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐂𝐃𝐈𝐈𝐒!

In line with the opening of the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, third-year Public History students enrolled in HST 121 (Social and Cultural History of the Philippines), under the instruction of Dr. Marjorie Almario-Magdadaro, visited the Center for Digital Iligan, Innovation & Sustainability (CDIIS) for an academic immersion focused on the intersection of public history and digital innovation.

The students were warmly welcomed by 𝗖𝗗𝗜𝗜𝗦 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗮, who delivered an opening address emphasizing the synergy between public history and emerging digital technologies in preserving and promoting local history and heritage. The activity also reflects the vision of Department Chairperson, Dr. Jamelyn B. Palattao, who continues to champion digital history initiatives among students and faculty. Participants likewise received an orientation from 𝗛𝘂𝗯 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗝𝗶𝗺𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗶 about CDIIS, its facilities, equipment, and digital tools.

The HST 121 class is currently producing historical documentaries utilizing digital technologies and innovative storytelling platforms as a means of bringing history to wider public audiences. This initiative aims not only to make historical knowledge more accessible and engaging, but also to foster historical consciousness and generate meaningful community impact through creative public history practice.

The Department of History likewise envisions further strengthening its partnership with CDIIS, particularly in preparation for the upcoming digital history exhibits scheduled later this year. This collaboration marks a significant step toward advancing digital public history and deepening community engagement.

The Department of History extends its warmest congratulations to its faculty members who were recognized during the recently concluded 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗠𝗦𝗨-𝗜𝗜𝗧 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀’ 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, held on April 22, 2026, at the University Amphitheatre.

𝗗𝗿. 𝗖𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗕. 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗮𝗻 (Project Leader), 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝘂𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶 𝗔. 𝗖𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗼, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗠𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗽 𝗛. 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮, and 𝗗𝗿. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗷𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼-𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗱𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗼, were awarded for their externally funded project titled “𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙙 𝙀𝙩𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙤, 𝙎𝙪𝙡𝙪, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙣,” supported by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). This project aims to produce a comprehensive history of Muslim indigenous communities in Mindanao, with plans for publication as a multi-volume series. It represents a significant contribution to the growing body of Philippine historical literature.

𝗔𝘀𝘀𝘁. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗝𝗲𝗱 𝗕. 𝗢𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗼 was also recognized for his co-authored Scopus-indexed publication, “𝘿𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙣 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙜𝙚: 𝘼 𝙈𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝘼𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨,” published in MDPI Informatics, a top 10% journal. The study focuses on the development of a culturally responsive mobile dictionary designed to support the preservation of the endangered Higaonon language in Mindanao. It highlights how community-driven digital tools can advance indigenous language revitalization while upholding cultural integrity, intellectual property, and practical community needs.

The activity outlines the recognition program for the 2026 MSU-IIT Research Days, highlighting awards for excellence in research and innovation for the year 2025. In addition, the program features awards for externally funded projects and special recognitions for this year's Research Days’ exhibitions and laboratories, including Best Exhibition Booth, People’s Choice Award, and Highly Collaborative and Productive Laboratories.

These achievements reflect the Department’s continuing commitment to excellence in research, cultural preservation, and scholarly innovation.
