The School of Interdisciplinary Studies, in partnership with the Gender and Development Centre and the College of Nursing, conducted an informative and empowering seminar titled “Pagpasuso: Pundasyon sa Kahimsog ug Kalamboan sa Katilingban” as part of its Breastfeeding Awareness Initiative. The activity gathered nursing students in a meaningful discussion highlighting the importance of breastfeeding in promoting the health, nutrition, and overall well-being of both mothers and children.

The seminar was spearheaded by SIS GAD Focal Person Prof. Ajree D. Malawani and MSU-IIT GAD Focal Person Prof. Yasmira P. Moner, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to advancing gender-responsive and health-centered advocacies within the academic community. Through the discussions, participants gained deeper insights into how breastfeeding contributes not only to maternal and child health but also to the development of healthier and more empowered communities.

A key highlight of the activity was the learning session delivered by Dr. Sittie Aisah P. Ali, RN, MD, who emphasized the vital role of future healthcare professionals in empowering mothers and encouraging them to choose breastfeeding. Echoing the statement of Mahatma Gandhi, “There is no finer investment for any community than putting milk into babies,” the discussion underscored breastfeeding as a shared social responsibility and a foundation of sustainable community development.

The activity concluded with the participants signing a Pledge of Commitment, signifying their dedication to supporting and empowering lactating mothers through advocacy, education, and compassionate healthcare practice.

The School of Interdisciplinary Studies (SIS), MSU-IIT, successfully conducted its first Gender and Development (GAD) seminar entitled “𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬” on May 18, 2026, at the University Library Theater.

This meaningful initiative was spearheaded by 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐀𝐣𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐃. 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐢, SIS GAD Focal Person, in partnership with the Gender and Development Centre led by 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐘𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐫𝐚 𝐏. 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫.

The activity brought together SIS graduate students, faculty, and practitioners in a conversation on equitable access, inclusive policy development, and gender responsive institutional practices grounded in research and evidence.

Prof. Moner emphasized that SIS students are not only learners but also practitioners and development partners capable of becoming force multipliers of gender inclusive development in their own communities and institutions. She highlighted the vital role of inclusivity in addressing climate change, sustainability, and pressing societal issues.

One of the most powerful reminders from the session was:
💬 “What hasn’t been counted, does not count.”

The statement underscored the importance of documenting interventions using appropriate GAD tools to ensure that development initiatives remain inclusive, measurable, and responsive.

As SIS continues to strengthen its commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, this activity advances the goals of:
🎯 SDG 5 Gender Equality
🎯 SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities
🎯 SDG 13 Climate Action
🎯 SDG 16 Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
🎯 SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals

Together, let us continue building institutions that are inclusive, equitable, and transformative for all.
