West Visayas State University–Janiuay Campus conducted the three-day implementation of Project B.A.S.A. (Bilingual At Home–Strategies and Assistance): Empowering Mothers to Teach Filipino and English in Barangay Yabon, Janiuay, Iloilo on September 18, 25, and October 2, 2026. The activity was a collaborative initiative of the Graduate School Office and the Filipino Department of the School of Teacher Education, in coordination with the Research, Innovation and Extension Office, aimed at equipping mothers with practical strategies for supporting their children's reading and bilingual language development at home.
A highlight of the three-day activity was the active involvement of students from the Master of Arts in Education major in English as a Second Language (MAEd ESL) program. Selected students served as resource speakers and activity leaders, particularly in sessions focusing on strategies for teaching reading in English. Ms. Ceza Marie Yocogco and Ms. Darling Wen Penuela shared practical and age-appropriate reading strategies with the participating mothers. They complemented their discussions with parent-friendly learning materials, demonstrations, and interactive activities that allowed the mothers to practice the strategies and explore ways of applying them during reading activities at home.
The participation of the MAEd ESL students provided a meaningful opportunity to apply theories and principles learned in the graduate program to an authentic community setting. Concepts from second-language acquisition, psycholinguistics, bilingualism, language teaching, and reading instruction were translated into practical activities responsive to the needs of the mothers and their children. Through Project B.A.S.A., the students were able to bridge theory and practice, while the participating mothers gained accessible tools and greater confidence in supporting their children's literacy development in English and Filipino. The three-day initiative thus underscored the university's commitment to community engagement, lifelong learning, and service through education.
