We often call young people the “pag-asa ng bayan”, but are we really giving them the space to shape the nation today?

This International Youth Day, let’s look beyond simply celebrating young people. The youth are already navigating today’s crises, contributing to our communities, and speaking up about the future we all share. We don’t need to wait for tomorrow to take them seriously.

We are already here. And the nation is now.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) collected a total of P2.003 trillion from January to July 2026, surpassing the P1.990 trillion goal for the period by P13.53 billion or 0.68%.

The seven-month collection was also P102.60 billion higher than the same period last year, representing a 5.4% year-on-year growth.

Commissioner Charlito Martin R. Mendoza said the BIR has already collected around 60% of its full-year collection target for 2026, reflecting improving taxpayer compliance and the sustained collection efforts of the Revenue Regions, Revenue District Offices, and the Large Taxpayers Service.

“We remain guided by the President’s directive to make government services more accessible to taxpayers, and by Secretary Frederick Go’s direction to make tax administration fairer and more efficient for businesses and investors,” he added.

For the month of July alone, BIR gross collections reached P358.44 billion, exceeding the P336.07 billion monthly target by P22.37 billion, or 6.66%. July collections were also P19.41 billion higher than the same month last year, posting 5.73% year-on-year growth.

“These results show that better taxpayer service, clearer rules, and effective enforcement can support stronger compliance and collection,” Commissioner Mendoza said.

Under its five-point reform agenda, BIR DARES, the Bureau continues to simplify tax rules and processes, expand digital services, improve taxpayer assistance, strengthen audit safeguards, and enforce tax laws against deliberate noncompliance. These reforms form part of the Bureau’s broader effort to improve compliance while protecting the government’s revenue base.

“We will continue helping taxpayers comply correctly and on time, while making sure that taxes properly due are collected fairly and efficiently,” Commissioner Mendoza said.
