🔗 WHAT KIND OF ORGANIZATION IS THE IOOF?
When people hear about the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, some think of lodge meetings, ceremonies, regalia, or simply a group of people gathering together. For others who may not be familiar with our history, traditions, and practices, questions and misconceptions about the nature of our fraternity may arise.
And that is understandable. Not everyone has had the opportunity to learn what Odd Fellowship truly represents.
But Odd Fellowship is much more than what people see from the outside.
We are a fraternal organization built on the principles of Friendship, Love, and Truth. We come together not only to form friendships, but also to develop our character, strengthen our values, and learn the meaning of genuine brotherhood and sisterhood.
We have a history of mutual aid. Long before many modern systems of social assistance and financial protection became widely available, such as health insurance, social security, and other welfare programs, Odd Fellows believed in looking after one another, especially during sickness, hardship, and times of loss.
This tradition reminds us that brotherhood is not only about being together during good times, but also about standing by one another when life becomes difficult.
And we are also a charitable and community-serving organization. Today, Odd Fellowship continues its tradition of service through educational programs, scholarships, community outreach, humanitarian assistance, and other charitable activities.
Our purpose extends beyond the walls of our lodge. We are called to help those in need, support worthwhile causes, and make a positive difference in the communities around us.
But here is something every member should remember:
Being an Odd Fellow is not just about belonging to an organization. It is about living what the organization stands for.
Our regalia may identify us. Our lodge may bring us together. Our traditions may remind us of our history.
But it is our actions that show people who we truly are.
How we treat our fellow members, how we help those in need, and how we serve without expecting anything in return- these are what give our fraternity meaning.
Friendship should be felt. Love should be demonstrated. Truth should be practiced.
Because at the end of the day, the greatest way to introduce someone to Odd Fellowship is not simply to explain what we are.
It is to show them what we stand for.
In Friendship, Love, and Truth. 🔗
