COBE InnoVentures Summit 2025 Spotlights Northwestern University’s Rising Innovators
SM City Laoag, December 11, 2025

The College of Business Education (COBE) of Northwestern University once again affirmed its central role in Region 1’s innovation ecosystem as it staged the COBE InnoVentures Summit 2025, a premier showcase of creativity, entrepreneurial imagination, and market-driven innovation. Held at SM City Laoag for the second consecutive year, the summit featured the outstanding outputs of 3rd- and 4th-year BSBA students and the College of International Hospitality and Tourism Management (CIHTM) under the mentorship of Prof. Eric S. Parilla, DBA, FBE.

The day opened with an inspiring keynote message from Cris Delgado, Regional Director of the Wadhwani Entrepreneur Network (WEN) Southeast Asia. His talk, “From Idea to Impact: Launching a Scalable Student Startup in the Philippines,” challenged NWU students to transcend traditional classroom outputs and embrace a mindset of scalability, sustainability, and problem-solving for national development.

In the afternoon, the highly anticipated Pitching Competition brought forward the most promising ideas of the year. CIHTM’s “Asparagus Pasta” emerged as Best Pitch, demonstrating culinary innovation with strong market potential and a sustainability-oriented value proposition. Among BSBA exhibitors, the Durian Cologne project captivated judges and mall spectators alike, winning Best Booth for its creative product display and compelling brand narrative. Meanwhile, the standout award for Best Innovative Product went to BSBA’s Cow Dung Paper, a breakthrough concept that transforms agricultural waste into a functional, eco-friendly material aligned with the circular economy.

Beyond the competition results, the InnoVentures Summit underscored COBE’s strategic mission of cultivating innovators, startup founders, and future industry disruptors. Serving as a catalyst within the broader innovation ecosystem of Ilocos Norte and Northwestern University, COBE continues to connect academe, industry, government, and community partners—ensuring that student ideas evolve into viable ventures that address real-world challenges.

With strong faculty mentorship, institutional support, and growing partnerships like Wadhwani Foundation, the COBE InnoVentures Summit 2025 stands as a testament to Northwestern University’s commitment to shaping the next generation of Filipino innovators

NWU Hosts Global Webinar on “Farm to Fork” With Lincoln University’s Dr. Jacob Kambuta

Northwestern University, through the Research, Community, Social Development, and Internationalization (RCSDI) Office and the College of Business Education (COBE), successfully hosted an international webinar on “Farm to Fork: A Social Entrepreneur’s Journey—Aligning Small-Scale Agriculture with Global Goals,” featuring Dr. Jacob Kambuta of Lincoln University, New Zealand, on November 14, 2025.

The session, attended by more than 70 faculty members, students, and industry partners, explored how small-scale agriculture can integrate sustainability, innovation, and social entrepreneurship to address global food system challenges. Dr. Kambuta presented the Farm-to-Fork Value Chain, highlighting four key stages—Production, Processing, Distribution, and Consumption—and demonstrated how each stage contributes to transparent, traceable, and climate-responsive food systems.

A key portion of the webinar focused on the alignment of the Farm-to-Fork model with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Dr. Kambuta emphasized that empowering small-scale farmers is essential to achieving global targets for food security, biodiversity preservation, and climate mitigation.

The speaker also discussed European Union (EU) 2030 targets, including reductions in pesticide use, fertilizers, and antimicrobials, as well as increasing organic farming practices. However, he noted the difficulties social entrepreneurs face, such as regulatory hurdles, market entry barriers, and the “mission vs. margin” dilemma, where maintaining affordability and sustainability can conflict with profitability. Dr. Kambuta stressed the importance of patient capital—long-term investment that prioritizes social impact.

Participants expressed appreciation for the webinar’s relevance, especially as the Philippines continues to navigate issues in food systems, climate vulnerability, and agricultural productivity. The event also strengthened the growing academic partnership between Northwestern University and Lincoln University, paving the way for future collaborations in research, innovation, and agricultural development.

The Farm-to-Fork webinar stands as a testament to NWU’s commitment to internationalization, sustainability, and community-centered solutions, equipping students and educators with global perspectives that can drive local transformation.
