Today, June 12, 2026, we mark the ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ด๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ of the ๐ฃ๐ต๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐โ ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ, the day when our people first raised the flag and sang the anthem with pride. That courage and unity launched a long struggle, ๐ฏ๐๐ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฟ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฑ ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ด๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ผ๐บ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐น๐น. Foreign powers and local elites continued to shape our economy and politics, leaving lasting dependence and inequality that keep many Filipinos from enjoying the full promise of liberty.
Todayโs threats are both external and internal, unequal trade, corporate control of land and resources, and subtle foreign interference limit our choices, while corruption among those entrusted to serve the public enriches a few and deepens poverty for many. These forces displace indigenous peoples, drive farmers off their lands, silence journalists and activists, and erode the civic space essential to democracy, showing that formal independence alone is not the same as true, lived freedom.
If we are to realize genuine sovereignty, we must confront both outside influence and domestic corruption, defend farmers and indigenous rights, protect our natural resources, demand accountability, and safeguard free speech and independent institutions. Resistance today takes many forms, community service, investigative journalism, principled leadership, and everyday citizens holding power to account, and as communication students and future leaders, we must inform, mobilize, and keep the story of resistance alive.
