LOOK || The DSS Public Service Committee, alongside volunteer faculty members trained in cultural mapping, successfully launched the first installment of Cultural Mapping Lite (CMAP Lite) this August, focusing on immovable tangible (built) heritage. The initiative kicked off on August 3 with a full-day webinar, followed by a self-directed exercise where participants mapped the built heritage within their own local communities.

Twenty-five participants from various LGUs, educational institutions, and public and private organizations joined the webinar. While several participants have already submitted their mapped heritage sites, submissions remain open in consideration of recent events.

Meanwhile, CMAP Lite Batch Two is currently accepting participants. This upcoming session will focus on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and will follow the two-part format of Batch One, with the webinar scheduled on October 19, 2026.

𝗖𝗠𝗔𝗣 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱
CMAP Lite is a shorter, needs-specific adaptation of the full cultural mapping training. This specialized version is designed specifically to address the operational challenges frequently faced by local government units (LGUs) and interested organizations, particularly constraints on budget, manpower, and time.
While standard comprehensive training typically spans at least five days, CMAP Lite focuses between one and three heritage domains, selected based on the unique needs and priorities of the partner institutions. CMAP Lite also incorporates flexibility in its delivery, offering face-to-face, hyperflex, or fully online learning modes to accommodate varying organizational capacities.
Conceptualized by Asst. Prof. Ryan Alvin M. Pawilen and co-developed with Asst. Prof. Bernardo M. Arellano III, as early as 2024, this initiative aims to enrich the public service offerings of the Department of Social Sciences (DSS) at UPLB, providing LGUs with a practical, accessible pathway to fulfill their legally mandated cultural mapping duties.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻?
As mentioned in the backgrounder, this is for LGUs and organizations, even individuals, who are facing limitations in budget, manpower, or time for training alone but want to start somewhere for cultural mapping. The training is also designed with the goal that the knowledge and skills acquired for a certain heritage domain can be transferrable to other domains or make understanding easier.

Paalam at maraming salamat, Dr. Mojares.
