The q***r experience in the Philippines exists within the crossroads of tolerance and acceptance, where many continue to resist systems that disregard their humanity. While the country ranks as among the most LGBTQIA+ friendly countries in Asia, there remains a significant difference between tolerance and acceptance. Tolerance is surface-level; it is simply putting up with them but lacks the respect and empathy to recognize their lived realities.
Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community experience stigma, homophobia/transphobia, harassment, and other forms of discrimination. These issues are manifested in the way society perceives them—in debates over which restrooms they should use, whether their relationships and marriage deserve legal recognition, and what rights they are entitled to enjoy. Such perceptions and treatment leave them vulnerable to daily injustices and systemic oppression, creating fears that shape their everyday life.
Real acceptance does not excuse systems of oppression, but should encourage q***r people in the country to live unapologetically and with dignity, with recognized rights from the state. It views q***r lives and q***r love as worth existing just like any other. It does not vilify calls for equality as too much and advances basic human rights that the community has long been deprived of.
Pride, therefore, necessitates equality. It is both a celebration of the diversity and vibrancy of q***r lives and a resistance against oppression. The point is to ensure that q***r people not only survive today, but are able to live openly and safely for generations to come.
This Pride Month, the UPLB Sigma Alpha Sorority honors and supports the continuing struggle for equality and upholding LGBTQIA+ rights in the country. We urge the Philippine Congress to pass the S*xual Orientation, Gender Identity or Expression, and S*x Characteristics (SOGIESC) Equality Bill to recognize and protect the fundamental rights of every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
