In the recent report from the University of the East (UE) Student Council last December 16th of 2024, students are yet to suffer another possible Tuition Fee and Other Fees Increase (TOFI) for the next academic year 2025-2026. This upcoming 27th and 28th of January, college student councils from both Manila and Caloocan campuses are set to meet with the university president, chancellor, and officers for TOFI consultation as well as for transparency of the University of the East (UE)โs financial statement from A.Y. 2019 until the present.
The Student Council Alliance of the Philippines (SCAP) stands in full solidarity with the University of the East Manila (UE Manila) Student Councils in their firm opposition to the proposed tuition fee increase (TOFI). We recognize the profound challenges faced by students across the country due to the continuous rise in tuition fees, which only serves to widen the gap in access to quality education.
The promise of "affordable quality education" by the UE Manila institution remains unfulfilled as students are treated as mere consumers, subjected to financial burdens that force many to abandon their dreams of completing their education. We echo the condemnation of the UE Manila Student Councils against the commodification of education and the blatant disregard for the welfare of students.
We call on the UE Manila administration to address the legitimate grievances raised by the student body, including the lack of improvements in essential facilities and services; the failure to provide adequate resources for critical programs like the College of Dentistry; the lack of support for student-athletes; and the insufficient scholarship quotas. These highlight systemic neglect that cannot be justified by increased tuition fees.
Furthermore, the imposition of surcharge fees on students struggling to meet payment deadlines is an unjust penalty that exacerbates the financial strain on already burdened families.
SCAP joins the UE Manila Student Councils in demanding transparency, accountability, and genuine commitment from the administration to uphold the right to accessible, quality education. We call on all student councils, organizations, and allies to unite in this cause, as the fight for affordable education is a fight for the future of our nation.
Together, we will continue to stand against policies undermining the fundamental right to education and advocate for an inclusive, equitable, and student-centered education system.
