Lecture Series on Craniofacial, Surgical, and Special Care Orthodontics |
The Orthodontic Graduate Students of the University of the Philippines attended an insightful lecture series on Craniofacial, Surgical, and Special Care Orthodontics and participated in case discussions of difficult cleft cases on October 27 and 28, 2025. These events were organized by the Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation Philippines (NCFP).
On October 27, Dr. Vesna Ferrer, a craniofacial orthodontist and Assistant Professor of Orthodontics at the School of Dentistry, Oregon Health & Science University, delivered an in-depth lecture on CBCT techniques and the use of multiplanar reconstruction analysis in evaluating alveolar bone grafting. This was followed by a lecture by Dr. Stephen Yen, a craniofacial orthodontist, Director of the Fellowship in Craniofacial and Special Needs Orthodontics, and Associate Professor of Clinical Dentistry at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry. He generously shared his expertise on the management of craniofacial, surgical, and special care orthodontic cases, with emphasis on bilateral cleft cases and distraction osteogenesis.
On October 28, 2025, Dr. Cecile Cabrera, a faculty member of the UP College of Dentistry Graduate Program in Orthodontics and the head of the Orthodontic Program of NCFP, presented her difficult cleft cases and engaged in a productive case consultation regarding patient management strategies with Dr. Yen, Dr. Ferrer, and NCFP oral and maxillofacial surgeons Dr. Glenda de Villa and Dr. Xenia Velmonte.
The two-day event was a remarkable learning experience for the graduate students, fostering deeper understanding and appreciation of the complexities involved in craniofacial orthodontic care.
