CNSM marked the afternoon of its 40th Foundation Day with the much-anticipated Patalbugan 2025, a showcase of talent, creativity, and humor from the four departmentsโBiology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. Each department was given 20โ30 minutes to perform any artistic presentation of their choice, from singing and dancing to comedy, acting, poetry, and faculty participation. The judgesโ panel included Dr. Annabella G. Villarino (Biology), Prof. Mitchelle B. Janayon (Chemistry), Dr. Rodelito M. Aldema (Mathematics), Dr. Henry P. Aringa (Physics), and a staff representative to ensure fairness. MSU System President Atty. Paisalin B. Tago also attended briefly and helped draw the department sequence.
The Mathematics Department opened the competition with a performance centered on โBalong,โ a student bullied for supposedly having no talent. Their storyline moved from comedic registration scenes to Balongโs self-motivation, followed by a lively stage show. Students and faculty danced to a mix of pop songs, including โMaterial Girl,โ BINIโs โSalamin, Salaminโ performed humorously by male students as โBUNI,โ and a runway bit featuring faculty in costumes with improvised punchlines for each walk. They also added math humorโlike โHindi mean, hindi rin median pero always on the mode,โ and โIf you want to lose weight, mag-calculus na.โ The act ended with a โrealโ talent show where students performed songs and dances, including Balongโs solos of โAmakabogeraโ and โTala,โ leading to his victory in the talent showdown.
The Chemistry Department followed with a series of classroom-based skits inspired by well-known memes and online humor. The scenes showed a chaotic class interrupted by Maโam Castro, unexpected jokes about group counting, and a debate segment on the classic โchicken or eggโ question. They also presented cafeteria situations, romantic classroom moments, and meme lines like โWhatโs the mather? Why so anger?โ and โPagod na pagod na pagod na pagod.โ Their highlight was a comedic mock โinterdance competition,โ where the hosts shifted from an excited tone to a sad one because โthe mayor died,โ only to happily resume after joking about corruption. The performance ended with full-group dance numbers, including โCanโt Stop the Feeling,โ and a faculty dance to Taylor Swiftโs โOpalite.โ
The Biology Department staged a story inspired by Glinda and Elphabaโtwo girls living in different โworlds,โ one all pink and one literally green. Their performance blended singing, drama, humor, and symbolic elements of resilience. Faculty members entered the stage riding a jeep, with comedic exchanges about English speaking fears. Another memorable scene featured their department chair acting as Maโam Castro, expecting a Teacherโs Day surprise, only to demand 25 research titles and a long quiz after realizing no surprise was prepared. The story continued with classroom introductions, confessions, and a duet performance of โA Million Dreamsโ while portraying two students supporting each other through struggles. They also teased the upcoming Science Week and showcased lab-themed segments, appearances from the โF4 Bio Boys,โ faculty dancing, and a unifying message of โI rise because we rise.โ Their final number featured โSaranggola,โ ending with students and faculty greeting: โHappy 40th founding anniversary, CNSM.โ
The Physics Department closed the competition with a performance that mixed romance, drama, nostalgia, music, and high-energy dance numbers. They opened with a serenade scene that ended unexpectedly with the male characterโs death, accompanied by live piano, guitar, and vocal back-ups. This transitioned into classic songs like โHaving You Near Meโ and โYou Give a Reason for My Being.โ They then shifted into a medley of 1980sโ2000s hits, which got the audience singing along. Faculty members performed the Macarena, โPamela One, Pamela Two,โ and even a humorous slow โOtso-Otso,โ which drew a loud crowd reaction. The department chair also danced to โMr. Suave.โ The group continued with TikTok dancesโโTeach Me How to Dougie,โ โKiki Do You Love Me,โ โWatch Me Whip,โ โGangnam Styleโโfollowed by budots, โGirl in the Mirror,โ and a poetry reading that creatively compared crushes to scientific concepts from each department. They ended with a large all-student and faculty dance sequence.
After all performances, multiple intermission numbers by CNSM faculty and staff entertained the crowd, followed by closing remarks from Dr. Rodelito M. Aldema, the CNSMโs Assistant Dean. The awarding then recognized outstanding contributions:
