The Environmental Science Society formally announces the Thesis Final Defense of 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐲 𝐀. 𝐒𝐢𝐞𝐠𝐚, a candidate for the degree Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, who will present her study entitled:

“Unraveling Microplastics in the Mid- and Lower Reaches of the Talabaan River in Naawan, Misamis Oriental.

This research provides valuable insights into the growing issue of microplastic pollution in freshwater systems and contributes to a better understanding of its prevalence and environmental implications.

The Society proudly extends its support and best wishes for a successful defense as she reaches this important academic milestone and contributes meaningful knowledge to the field of Environmental Science.

On May 8, 2026, the BS in Environmental Science 3rd Year students successfully conducted the ENS196 – Industries Inspection and Seminar at the Audio Visual Room of Mindanao State University at Naawan with the theme: “𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬.”

The seminar provided valuable insights on coastal and environmental issues through the discussions of its guest speakers, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐀. 𝐕𝐞𝐝𝐫𝐚, 𝐏𝐡.𝐃. 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐬. 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧, 𝐋𝐏𝐓, 𝐌𝐒𝐜.

Dr. Vedra shared important knowledge about storm surges and disaster preparedness while Ms. Hinagdanan discussed the growing concern of marine litter and the importance of environmental responsibility.

This meaningful event reminded us of the importance of community awareness, environmental protection, and preparedness in building a safer and more sustainable coastal future.

The seminar became successful through the support and active participation of the students, faculty and staff involved in the said event.

𝐈𝐧 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐬 📷 | 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐲 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐀𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐒𝐔𝐍.

The Philippine Association of Environmental Science Students (PAESS) officers conducted courtesy visit to Mindanao State University at Naawan—covering the Research Extension and the College of Environment and Life Sciences—on March 27, 2026.

The visit was led by PAESS President Sir Kendrick L. Faronilo from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, together with PAESS Mindanao local officers from various universities. They were warmly welcomed by the Environmental Science Society officers and the faculty members of the Department of Environmental Science.

The activity began with a campus and seaside tour, followed by a visit to the University Hostel. The delegation then proceeded to the Research Extension, where Ma’am Zy Perpetua the Research Specialist I, led a tour of the Rey Labs, highlighting the Microplastic Research Laboratory. The visit concluded at the College of Environment and Life Sciences, where discussions were held at the Dean’s Office alongside the Department of Environmental Science faculty, headed by Sir Ramon Francisco Q. Padilla the Department Chairperson and ESS Adviser Sir Michael James O. Baclayon, alongside with Sir Sonnie A. Vedra, Ma’am Brigette C. Hinagdanan, and Ma’am Zy Perpetua.

This visit strengthened collaboration between PAESS and the Environmental Science Department of MSU at Naawan, fostering shared goals in environmental sustainability and stewardship. It also served as a platform for connection, learning, and unity among future environmental leaders across Mindanao. 🍃
