The history of the Catholic church in Spanish Bikol may be understood through the concept of ๐ฑ๐๐ฟ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฎฬ๐ป, or coming together, that defined the encounter between missionaries and the natives. Rather than a unilinear process of imposition, the establishment and growth of the Church through the er****on of mission sites, parishes, pueblos and visitas in Bikol was shaped by complex dynamics of collaboration, negotiation, at times conflict, and also adaptation.
Erected in 1595 through the papal bull Super Specula, the Diocese of Caceres became southeastern Luzonโs ecclesiastical center. Working under the framework of the Patronato Real, its vitality relied on ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฏ๐จ๐ขฬ๐ฏโcollaborative participation among Spanish missionaries, native clergy, and the laity shaping local Catholicism through parishes and devotions. This historical co-responsibility mirrors Pope Francisโs contemporary vision of โsynodalityโโjourneying together, framing ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฏ๐จ๐ขฬ๐ฏ as an enduring model for ecclesial life. However, existing historiography heavily prioritizes episcopal figures, such as Francisco Gaรญnza and Jorge Barlin, and institutional histories. Native agency, parochial development, and lay involvement remain critical gaps, highlighting the need for deeper research into local participatory narratives.
As the See of Caceres, reflects on more than four centuries of history, 75 years as an archdiocese, this conference adopts ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฏ๐จ๐ขฬ๐ฏ as its central theme, both serving as a historical lens and a contemporary imperative. By revisiting the collaborative foundations of the church in Bikol and aligning them with the present call to synodality, it seeks to highlight how past and present converge in shaping a more participatory and responsive ecclesial community.
In partnership with the Archdiocese of Caceres and the dioceses of the region, Saysay Bikol is convening its third biennial conference commemorating the 75th anniversary of the elevation of the Caceres into an archdiocese.
The conference aims to: (1) explore new topics, themes, and perspectives in the local and regional histories of Bikol and the historical jurisdiction of the See of Caceres; (2) enrich the discourse in the Philippine ecclesiastical history; and (3) explore new historical sources about the See. The conference also intends to discuss and assess the state of various archives that hold records on the church in Bikol.
