Learning extends far beyond the four corners of the classroom for ten Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education (BTLEd) students majoring in Home Economics as they continue their 240-hour Industry Immersion Program at Mango Trove, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur.

Through hands-on exposure to actual hospitality operations, the students are gaining valuable experience in housekeeping services, event preparation, table set-up, food and beverage operations, and customer service management. The immersion provides an opportunity for them to translate classroom theories into practical workplace competencies while developing professionalism, adaptability, and industry-standard skills.

As future educators and practitioners in the field of Technology and Livelihood Education, these experiences serve as an important step in strengthening their technical expertise and preparing them for the dynamic demands of the hospitality and service sectors.

The implementation of the Industry Immersion is made possible through the guidance and support of SUC President III Dr. Mario P. Obrero, VP for Academic Affairs Dr. Jonathan Dela Cruz, Campus Director Atty. Jose Q. Cabatu and the leadership and coordination of Mr. Charlie J. Dasalla, Program Head of the BTLED Program.

The ongoing industry immersion reflects ISPSC Narvacan Campus' commitment to producing competent, industry-ready graduates through meaningful experiential learning and strong community and industry partnerships.

SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur โ€” Strengthening the role of science, technology, and innovation in regional development, representatives from Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region I convened for a Consultation and Collaboration Meeting on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the DOST Provincial Office in Ilocos Sur.

The meeting centered on advancing the implementation of the ONE ASIN Program and identifying strategic areas for collaboration that will further enhance the growing salt industry in the region.

The ISPSC delegation participated under the leadership and support of SUC President III, Dr. Mario P. Obrero, with representatives including Atty. Jose Q. Cabatu, Campus Director of ISPSC-Narvacan Campus; Dr. Jocelyn A. Absolor, Vice President for Research, & Extension; Dr. Milagros Liberato, Director for Research; and other faculty members and researchers.

Welcoming the delegation were Dr. Teresita Tabaog, Regional Director of DOST Region I, and Engr. Jordan L. Abad, Provincial Director of DOST Ilocos Sur.

Among the key topics discussed were the current status and challenges confronting the local salt industry, the development of the ASIN Roadmap, and the continuing implementation of DOST's โ€œAgham na Ramdamโ€ initiative. The meeting also explored opportunities for broader institutional collaboration involving State Universities and Colleges, proposal enhancement initiatives, and possible partnerships on water quality validation and related research undertakings.

More than a consultation, the gathering underscored a shared commitment to transforming scientific knowledge into practical solutions that benefit communities, industries, and local economies. Through strengthened partnerships among government agencies, higher education institutions, and stakeholders, the ONE ASIN Program continues to move toward a more sustainable and innovation-driven future for the Philippine salt industry.

For students of the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries program, learning extends far beyond the four corners of the classroom. As part of the BS Fisheries curriculum, students are required to complete 140 hours of On-the-Job Training (OJT), providing them with invaluable opportunities to apply classroom concepts in real-world fisheries and aquaculture settings.

This year, twenty-three (23) BS Fisheries students of Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College โ€“ Narvacan Campus have been deployed to three of the country's leading fisheries institutions under the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR):

โ€ข BFAR โ€“ National Freshwater Technology Center (NFTC), CLSU Compound, Science City of Muรฑoz, Nueva Ecija โ€“ 5 students

โ€ข BFAR โ€“ National Fisheries Development Center (NFDC), Binloc, Bonuan, Dagupan City, Pangasinan โ€“ 8 students

โ€ข BFAR โ€“ Regional Freshwater Aquaculture Technology Demonstration Center (RFATDEC), Paoay, Ilocos Norte โ€“ 10 students

Throughout their immersion, students participate in a wide range of field and laboratory activities, including fish production operations, hatchery management, water quality monitoring, aquaculture technology demonstrations, fish health assessment, harvesting procedures, and resource management practices. These experiences expose them to the realities of the fisheries industry while strengthening the technical competencies, professionalism, and work ethics expected of future fisheries practitioners.

The deployment forms part of ISPSC Narvacan Campus' continuing commitment to producing competent, industry-ready, and globally competitive fisheries graduates who can contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

The College extends its gratitude to its partner agencies for providing meaningful learning opportunities to its students and for supporting experiential education in fisheries.

The implementation of the OJT program is made possible through the guidance and support of SUC President III Dr. Mario P. Obrero, VP for Academic Affairs Dr. Jonathan Dela Cruz, Campus Director Atty. Jose Q. Cabatu, the leadership of Dr. Solomon L. Anagaran, Program Head of the BS Fisheries Program, and the coordination efforts of Christian C. Molina, OJT Coordinator.

As the students continue their journey from the classroom to the field, each experience serves as a stepping stone toward becoming the next generation of fisheries professionals, researchers, managers, and advocates for sustainable aquatic resource development.

On June 3, 2026, Faculty Researchers of ISPSC Narvacan Campus began a series of courtesy calls to local chief executives across Ilocos Sur as part of the implementation of the newly approved Institutional Research Program, *โ€œTechnical Capacity and Awareness of Local Officials on Fisheries Management and Ordinance Crafting in Ilocos Sur.โ€*

The initiative will engage coastal municipalities including Tagudin, Candon City, San Esteban, Santiago, Narvacan, Caoayan, Santa, San Ildefonso, San Juan, and Sinait, as well as the upland municipalities of Burgos, Suyo, Cervantes, Salcedo, and Quirino.

More than a research activity, the project opens a conversation between the academe and local governments on the realities of fisheries governance, policy implementation, and the challenges faced by communities whose lives remain closely tied to natural resources.

Led by Atty. Jose Q. Cabatu, Charlie Dasalla, Vanessa Joy R. Oboza, and Christian C. Molina, the study reflects the continuing role of state colleges and universities in producing knowledge that is grounded in local realities and responsive to community needs.

The research team likewise acknowledges the steadfast support of Dr. Mario P. Obrero, SUC President III, and Dr. Jocelyn Absolor, Vice President for Research and Extension whose commitment to strengthening the institutionโ€™s research culture continues to create opportunities for meaningful partnerships and impactful scholarship.

As the first doors open, the conversations beginโ€”not merely to gather data, but to better understand the people, policies, and communities that shape fisheries governance in Ilocos Sur.

Pride Month commemorates the 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, a pivotal event in the history of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement. The Stonewall Riots marked a significant turning point in the long struggle for equality which inspired greater advocacy and advancing the pursuit of inclusion for LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities.

As we observe Pride Month, let us continue to promote a culture of respect and empathy where every individual is valued and empowered to thrive.
