Romblon State University successfully conducted HABI 2026: Pagdiriwang ng Kultura at Sining on October 15-16, bringing together delegations from its different colleges and campuses to celebrate Filipino cultural heritage, artistic expression, and the traditions that unite the university community.
With the theme, “Hinahabi ang mga Pulo, Pinararangalan ang Pamana, Hinuhubog ang Kinabukasan,” HABI 2026 celebrates the richness of our cultural heritage while recognizing the role of arts and creativity in shaping a future rooted in Filipino identity. Participating delegations were set to showcase their artistic abilities and represent their respective campuses in a celebration that recognizes both their distinct cultural expressions and their shared identity as one university.
The opening program began with a processional march, followed by the entrance of the University colors. The Yagting Kanugkog Chorale led the doxology and singing of the Philippine National Anthem, while an audiovisual presentation featured the hymn of the Social and Cultural Affairs Office (SCAO). Afterwards, Dr. John B. Fabello, director of SCAO, delivered the welcome remarks.
Special performances by SCAO performers Johana Doraine T. Firmalo and Keira Angel L. De G***r, the Agogocoy Folk Dancers, and the Yagting Kanugkog Chorale featured the program’s celebration of artistic talent and cultural traditions. Messages of support were also delivered by Odiongan Mayor Hon. Roger Q. Fodra, Jr.; Romblon Governor Hon. Trina Alejandra Q. Firmalo-Fabic; and Romblon Lone District Representative Hon. Eleandro Jesus F. Madrona represented by Engr. Esteban S. Madrona, Chief of Staff, Office of the Congressman.
Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Dr. Gianinna Elaine M. Labicane and University President Prof. Dr. Merian P. Catajay-Mani delivered their respective messages, emphasizing the importance of the university community in sustaining its cultural identity and advancing its institutional aspirations.
A highlight of the event was the keynote address of Dr. Ramon P. Santos, National Artist for Music. His participation emphasized the significance of recognizing and nurturing Filipino music, arts, and cultural heritage. A plaque of appreciation was subsequently awarded to the keynote speaker.
The opening ceremony also featured the festival torch ceremony, participated in by the National Artist for Music, the University President and vice presidents, provincial government officials, the festival director, college and campus representatives, and selected student artists. Michael Z. Zapanta, champion of the STRASUC 2025 instrumental solo-classical guitar competition, led the festival pledge and oath of sportsmanship and artistic excellence.
After President Catajay-Mani formally declared the festival open, the program continued with an official festival photo, a festival unity dance featuring the RSU community and distinguished guests, the presentation of the University’s Ambassador and Ambassadress for Culture and the Arts, and the ground demonstration competitions among participating delegations.
Through HABI 2026, RSU highlights the role of arts and culture in preserving heritage, expressing community identity, and connecting generations. As the University continues to celebrate its journey and look toward the future, the festival provides a platform for RSUvians to showcase their talents while honoring the cultural traditions that make their communities distinct.
