Misamis University Rolls Out DOST-Funded Environmental Initiative in the Municipality of Tukuran, ZDS

A project funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, and led by the Misamis University Research Center, in partnership with the Municipality of Tukuran, is empowering local communities to care for Tukuran's seas and protect its marine resources.

On March 17–18, 2026, organizers conducted a two-day event to share project findings and raise awareness of marine life and resource conservation. The event gathered municipal officials, barangay council members, fisherfolk, and other community stakeholders.

MU Agriculture Student Wins Silver in 14th FASMin Dish Gardening Competition

Mc Cyrill S. Otoc, a fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture student, earned second place in the Dish Gardening Competition at the 14th Federation of Agriculture Students in Mindanao (FASMin), held on April 10, 2026, at NMSCST in Tangub City. He was coached by Dr. Oliver S. Talip.

Competing against representatives from 21 agricultural schools across Mindanao, Mr. Otoc demonstrated craftsmanship and botanical expertise. His entry stood out among numerous innovative designs presented by participants from various institutions.

Misamis University commends Mr. Otoc for his achievement and for bringing honor and recognition to the university.

The Bureau of Immigration Central Office has approved Misamis University to accept foreign students to enroll in its academic programs, following compliance with accreditation requirements.

Misamis University designates the Office of Linkages and International Affairs as the Foreign Student Unit. Dr. Lloyd Ranises, Director of the Office, together with Ms. Louella Faye Lazaro, the University Registrar, shall exclusively represent the University’s foreign students in all transactions with the Bureau of Immigration.

Misamis University Researchers Contribute to Discovery of New Begonia Species in Mindanao

What began as a field survey in the forests of Misamis Occidental has led to an international scientific milestone. A newly identified species, Begonia occidentalis, has been formally published in the international scientific journal Phytotaxa, marking a significant milestone in Philippine botanical research. The discovery is the result of a collaborative effort among Misamis University, the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), and the Department of Health – Center for Health Development, Northern Mindanao (Region 10).

Strengthening Global Opportunities: MU Co-Hosts Manaaki Scholarship Information Session

To promote a culture of care for scholars and service to the community, Misamis University co-hosted an information session on New Zealand’s Manaaki Postgraduate Scholarship on March 17, 2026. With roots in Mindanao, Ms. Dyan Mabunga (Head of International Development Cooperation, New Zealand Embassy) led the session, which was attended by MU deans, department heads, and students, as well as coordinators from Community Extension and Linkages. In line with promoting a hybrid and inclusive setup, Ms. Mabunga also facilitated a simultaneous Zoom meeting attended by MU faculty and staff, along with colleagues from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).
