𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐒𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐒’ 𝐃𝐀𝐘🕯️

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭?!

Elaborate costumes, comedic depictions, realistic scars. Imitation blood, painted faces.

What a fun day to be spooked-- the award for the scariest costume however, goes to this man who wears a suit. He's not trick or treating nor portraying. He is sitting, right there on his throne while the rest of us look upon him with fear, not because he is scary-- but he is cruel. He wears red but its not blood. He's green but he's not a witch. Not a m*rderer but he butchered the value of peso, and in a short while, he will be joined by his friend, the wicked witch of the west-- he's orange, not green. He can't be melted by water because he's here to suck it all up.

𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗥𝗬 | "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗼𝘁."

There is a photograph in our house that no one remembers taking. At least, I don't.

It hangs inside a large frame painted in gold. Inside it is a small apartment, a bedroom with photographs on the bedside table, a flower in a glass vase, candles, and two coffee mugs. The bed is well made, though not perfectly. Little things are scattered around the room, the quiet evidence of a home well lived.

I feel as though I’ve seen it before.

Not the photograph itself, perhaps, but something in it. The shape of the room. The way the light falls through the window. Something I cannot quite reach when I try to remember it.

At first, the photograph felt like a dream. Light spills through the window and settles over everything. The flower is alive, its petals reaching toward the sun. There is something about the room that feels almost like a memory.

But every time I look at it, something changes.

The light fades into a pale gray, softening everything it touches. The flower begins to wither, its petals slowly curling inward. I tell myself it was always like this.

Because the more I try to hold on to it, the more it seems to slip into something I can no longer recognize.

I look closer and see two people inside the frame. I cannot make out their faces, but I know one of them is me. The other stands near the window, familiar in a way that hurts. I remember knowing that person. I remember the warmth of having them there, though I can no longer remember exactly how it began or how it ended.

For a moment, I think I remember the room differently.

Then, when I look again, there is only one person in the photograph. Me. Or someone who looks like me.

The room continues to disappear with every glance. The photographs on the bedside table lose their faces, the flower loses another petal, and the window fills with rain, until the second mug vanishes completely.

Is the photograph changing, or am I simply forgetting? I look away, then back again, as if the room might return when I am not watching.

It doesn't.

I look at the photograph again, and the apartment is almost gone. The walls bend strangely beneath the glass, colors blurring into something I no longer recognize. Even the person in the photograph has become a distortion. I cannot tell if it is me; I cannot tell if it was ever us.

Maybe the cruelest thing about memory is that we return to it expecting the past to be waiting exactly where we left it, only to find that it has shifted quietly with time, becoming something distant and unfamiliar, yet somehow still feeling like home.

I look at it for a little longer, though I no longer know what I am looking for. Still, I let my eyes linger, waiting for something to return.

𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗥𝗬 | “Do whatever it takes to remind myself that I’m still here and I still have a say”

What happens when your mind becomes the one thing you cannot trust, and the only certainty you have left is whatever reminds you that you’re still here?

I have sat in the cold hospital room long enough to remember its quiet cruelty. There, grief had always sat beside me—melting right onto my skin, as if it claimed every inch of who I could be.

I have felt enough of the stethoscope’s freezing touch, of the doctor’s hands striving to find what is wrong. I remember it all too well; an image forever ingrained in my heart and mind.

I remember sitting there and seeing myself from their own point of view: a tired little girl, holding onto what she has and what little she can still hold. I remember the group of nurses tending to my wounded mind, holding onto me like I’d break with one careless move.

And I have spent all that time in the hospital room to know how achingly lonely it feels to know what is wrong, yet be so utterly clueless at the same time.

But I am snapped to reality by yet another doctor coming to check in.

“How have you felt?
When did it start feeling this way?
Are you doing well on your medication?”

Question after question. Symptom after symptom. Until I forget what it feels to feel, until I am familiarized with the grief of forever being changed.

But someone beside me holds my hand and whispers: “It’s okay to ask for help. You’ve been strong. Rest, dear.” And a plethora of sweet nothings until I am reminded that I have still more left to live.

For a while, it’s okay. Tomorrow is another day. I breathe deep and note that even if I happen to be wrong about tomorrow being better, there could still be a few hundred more to say that phrase.

I am still me. I am here. And I still have a say.

𝗢𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗬𝗢𝗡 | 𝗦𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜, 𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗸𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗻

Today, we grieve the passing of a remarkable leader. Dr. Ruben Opeña was not only a guiding light but also a compassionate listener — a steadfast ally of the student publication. He was a leader who welcomed everyone with warmth, who showed up with courage, and who spoke with conviction.

His presence was a reminder that true leadership is not measured by titles, but by the sincerity of one’s service. He embodied humility, openness, and the courage to stand for truth.

May his soul find eternal rest, and may all who mourn be comforted in this time of profound sorrow.

Rest in peace, Dr. Ruben Opeña. Thank you for walking with us in the pursuit of truth.
