🌍 Day 5 | Planetary Health Blended Intensive Program (BIP)
Theme: Movement Building and Systems Change
📅 October 17, 2025

The final day of the Planetary Health BIP centered on Movement Building and Systems Change. Facilitated by Ms Margarita Sakilayan- Latvala of Diaconia University of Applied Sciences in Finland, it highlighted how collective effort and collaboration can drive meaningful transformation toward a just and sustainable future.

Participants dedicated the day to preparing for the Final Exhibition, where they showcased their week-long learnings and insights through creative outputs that reflected their Preferred Future. Each group was encouraged to express their theme using locally available and recycled materials, symbolizing creativity, sustainability, and commitment to action.

The team from Palawan State University (PSU), assigned with the theme “Policy, Power, and Participation,” featured three key symbols in their exhibit — the Globe Tree, the Mirror of Accountability, and the Lantern of Transparency — representing the interdependence of inclusive governance, social responsibility, and transparency in building equitable systems towards sustainable development.

After the exhibit, all participants engaged in a sharing session, where they reflected on their personal visions for the future and how these could be achieved collectively.

After this, the groups were then tasked to discuss their Probable and Preferred Futures. The PSU team were then invited by their original international groups from the online kick-off session. Together, through the use of technology (Zoom), they committed to keep in touch with each other intentionally as they envisioned continuous collaboration in pursuit of shared goals.

Through this final reflection, participants were reminded that sustainable transformation begins with collective awareness and action, and that every effort — no matter where or how small it begins — contributes to a larger movement toward planetary health and well-being. 🌱

🌍 Planetary Health BIP — Day 4 | October 16, 2025 🌿

The fourth day of the Planetary Health Blended Intensive Program (BIP) centered on the theme “Systems Thinking, Ambiguity, and Complexity.”

The first session, “Ambiguity and Systems Thinking,” was led by Mr. Sven Warnke of THWS University in Germany, where participants engaged in a group activity focused on observing and understanding systems — with members taking roles as both internal and external observers. This exercise encouraged participants to see how various components within a system interact and influence one another.

Following the activity, Mr. Warnke facilitated a discussion that deepened the understanding of how complex systems function beyond linear cause-and-effect relationships.

The day continued with the analysis of two case studies that demonstrated the complexities of human–environment interactions:

Case #1: "The Answer is Blowing in the Wind" was about green energy using windmills built on indigenous land of the Sami People in Norway. It was presented by Mr. Stian Eriksen of VID University in Norway, highlighting the social and cultural impacts of wind energy projects across Europe in line with the transition to renewable energy sources.

Case #2: “The Wound That Never Heals" was about Mining Issues in the Philippines, specifically highlighting its impacts in small island provinces like Palawan but also featuring case examples from various parts of the country. It was presented by Ms. Rachel Santos from Palawan State University, highlighting the challenge in balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and upholding the rights of marginalized communities like the indigenous people groups and farmers and fisher folk who are the most affected by mining and most vulnerable to disasters caused by climate change.

Half of the groups were assigned case #2, while the other half, including the PSU group, were assigned case #1. Each group had to analyze the case assigned to them in terms of interconnectedness and complexity of systems, highlighting how issues in the Global North and the Global South are deeply linked. Participants then created a complexity map to visualize these relationships, reflected on where they are in the map and what it implies as far as personal actions and goals are concerned, and shared their maps, reflections and insights with the whole group.

The session underscored the importance of systems thinking in understanding global challenges — a perspective that strengthens the foundation of Green Social Work, where holistic and interconnected approaches are essential to promoting social and ecological well-being. 🌱

🌍 Planetary Health BIP — Day 3 | October 15, 2025 🌿

The third day of the Planetary Health Blended Intensive Program (BIP) focused on the theme “Equity and Social Justice,” led by Ms. Paula Ratava and Ms. Sanna Jantunen Pezzia.

The discussion centered on understanding equity and social justice as essential pillars of planetary health — recognizing that sustainability is not only about protecting the environment but also about ensuring fairness, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all.

During the workshop, each group was tasked to promote one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda. The Palawan State University (PSU) team was first assigned SDG 4: Quality Education, where they developed concrete solutions to promote accessible and inclusive learning opportunities in real-life contexts.

For Task 2, the PSU group was then assigned SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and challenged to connect it with their first SDG. They explored how Quality Education can influence the development of Sustainable Cities and Communities, and vice versa — examining how one SDG can either promote or hinder the progress of another.

The session concluded with each group pitching their ideas, highlighting creative and actionable approaches toward achieving equity and sustainability — core principles reflected in Green Social Work, which bridges social justice and environmental well-being to build a fairer and more resilient world. 🌱

🌍 Planetary Health BIP — Day 2 | October 14, 2025 🌿

Interconnection with Nature.

The second day of the Planetary Health Blended Intensive Program (BIP) continued to explore the deep relationship between people and the planet.

The session began with the topic "Climate and Mental Health,” led by Ms. Annalisa Setti from the University College Cork (Ireland). The discussion highlighted how climate change not only impacts the environment but also affects our mental health and overall well-being, emphasizing the need for empathy, resilience, and awareness in facing global ecological challenges, as well as including green spaces in urban development and integrating nature in our everyday routine.

This was followed by the topic “Future-Oriented Thinking,” facilitated by Ms. Meg Sakilayan-Latvala a senior lecturer from the Diaconia University of Applied Sciences (Finland). Through workshops, group discussions, and presentations, participants engaged in the activity “Mapping the Future,” where each group was assigned a specific theme.

The Palawan State University (PSU) team focused on “The Future of Power, Policies, and Participation,” which challenged them to reflect on their Probable, Plausible, Possible, and Preferred Futures — envisioning how power structures, social policies, and active participation can shape a more sustainable world.

The day’s discussions encouraged participants to view planetary health through a forward-thinking lens — a practice rooted in Green Social Work, where social transformation and ecological awareness go hand in hand in building a just and sustainable future. 🌱

🌍 Planetary Health BIP — Day 1 | October 13, 2025 🌿

Even with the challenge of different time zones and not being able to join the sessions physically in Finland, the Palawan State University participants actively engaged in the first day of the Planetary Health Blended Intensive Program (BIP).

Day 1 tackled two major topics that deepened the participants’ understanding of humanity’s role in our planet’s well-being.

The first session, “Climate Fresk,” led by Andrea Stitzel of Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (Austria) explored the interconnectedness between humans and the environment, emphasizing that the impacts of our actions are not just forward and linear, they form feedback loops — eventually the environmental impacts of our actions will have a ripple effect and in turn affect us but in greater magnitude.

The second session focused on Planetary Boundaries, where each group delved into one of the nine boundaries. The PSU students were assigned to the topic “Change in Biosphere Integrity.”

These activities challenged participants to think globally, reflect on cause-and-effect relationships, and understand how each boundary is interlinked in maintaining the balance of our planet — a perspective that aligns deeply with the principles of Green Social Work, which advocates for social responsibility, ecological justice, and sustainable human–environment relationships. 🌱
