✨Patent Granted✨
Congratulations to Dr. Osonio and Dr. Vasquez on their recently granted patent 🥳

Congratulations to Dr. Airah P. Osonio and Dr. Magdaleno R. Vasquez Jr. from the UP Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering on their registered Philippine patent for the technology "Plasma reduction of metal ions in natural zeolite framework."

The process of 13.56 MHz radio-frequency (RF) plasma treatment was successful in the reduction of silver ion (Ag+) to its metallic state while keeping the zeolite template stable. The study explored the effect of gaseous discharges (argon (Ar), oxygen (O2), and a combination of the two) and exposure time on the fabricated composites, and their potential application as an antibacterial agent. Characterization of the untreated and plasma-treated silver-zeolite (AgZ) composites showed that the metal ions were completely reduced, resulting in Ag nanoparticles of sizes ranging from 10 to 40 nm. The antibacterial activity of the samples was tested using the disk diffusion method. All plasma-treated AgZ samples exhibited considerable antibacterial index against a gram-positive and a gram-negative test organism.

Some potential applications for this technology are antimicrobial materials and coatings, water purification and disinfection, including wastewater treatment, air purification and gas abatement, catalysis (or plasma catalysis), and food packaging and preservation (including ethylene control). The plasma-treated silver zeolite may also be used in odor‑control and deodorizing products, antimicrobial textiles, and antimicrobial plastics/packaging.

Please feel free to contact our office at [email protected] for any inquiries about this technology.
