๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐: UP x Matsuo Lab UTokyo GCI World Hackathon and Lecture
Over 70 students from the University of the Philippines and across Metro Manila are putting their data science and machine learning skills to practice in a one-day hackathon and lecture event this May 19, 2026 at the UP School of Statistics, Diliman. Participants are competing to build their machine learning model for home credit default risk prediction.
In his opening remarks, UP Vice President for Research and Innovation Dr. Joel Joseph S. Marciano, Jr. emphasized the need to be well-rounded citizens in this age, harnessing the advantages of specialized strengths, communication, teamwork, empathy, and collaboration.
โApart from deep technical skills, it is very important to apply [cross-cutting skills] in solving the problems and challenges in our societyโ, said VP Marciano.
Networking sessions, in-person lectures, and winner announcements are scheduled in the afternoon, which will be led by the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory. The team is represented by Aki Nakano, Erin Hirakawa, Shun Takezawa, Takashi Saito, and Taisuke Kinosh*ta.
This event is organized by the University of the Philippines, through the UP Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and UP Office of the Vice President for Digital Transformation, in partnership with the University of Tokyoโs Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory. It is also supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
