UP-IESM

UP-IESM Established in 2003, the Institute of Environmental Science & Meteorology (IESM) is an academic unit of the UP Diliman College of Science.

Established in 2003, The Institute of Environmental Science & Meteorology, or IESM, is an academic unit of the College of Science in the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Created by merging the Environmental Science Program (ESP) and the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography (DMO), IESM is envisioned as a leading center for environmental and atmospheric sciences in the Asia Pacific. The

institute focuses on understanding natural phenomena that influence key decisions on sustainable development in the Philippines and the region. IESM is dedicated to advancing the study of human impacts on the environment, predicting weather and climate patterns, and managing atmospheric and hydro-meteorological hazards. The institute now has 12 full-time faculty members, 5 professorial lecturers, and a growing number of Adjunct Professors. Since relocating to a new facility in 2014, IESM‘s research activities have significantly expanded

In December 2015, IESM was named a Center of Excellence for Environmental Science by the Commission on Higher Education. Additionally, in partnership with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), IESM serves as a Regional Training Center for the World Meteorological Organization Region.

Students from Env Sci 265 (Applications of Remote Sensing to Environmental Science) and Meteo 222 (Satellite Meteorology) visited the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) office in Eastwood on 3 June 2026 for an Academic Field Activity.

Env Sci 265 is team-taught by Dr. Lapuz, Dr. Gay Jane P. Perez, and IESM affiliate faculty members Dr. Armando Apan and Dr. Josefino Comiso, while Meteo 222 is led by Dr. Racoma. The visit served as the culminating activity for IESM’s remote sensing courses.

The activity included an overview of PhilSA’s mandate and functions, as well as discussions on its programs, research and development initiatives, technical capabilities, and possible areas for collaboration and engagement. The students also participated in a guided facility tour covering selected areas of the PhilSA office.

The visit also underscored IESM’s continuing links with the country’s space science community, with IESM faculty member Dr. Perez currently serving as Ad Interim Director General of PhilSA.

The UPD IESM Marine Mammal Research and Conservation proudly recognizes our Principal Investigator, Dr. Lemnuel V. Aragones, and President of both the Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network (PMMSN) and the Asian Marine Mammal Stranding Network (AMMSN) for delivering a Keynote Talk during the 5th Asian Marine Mammal Stranding Network Symposium & Workshop being held this 3–5 June 2026 at the Singapore Oceanarium, Resorts World Sentosa.

In his keynote talk, “Anthropogenic Impacts on Marine Mammals in Asia: Insights from Strandings,” Dr. Aragones highlighted the increasing human-induced threats faced by marine mammals across the continent and emphasized the vital role of stranding networks in advancing marine mammal research, conservation, and coordinated response efforts in the region.

Co-hosted by AMMMSN, Resorts World Sentosa, Thai Coral Reef, and Marine Life Conservation Foundation, the symposium-workshop brings together 100 attendees of different backgrounds under the theme “Interfacing In-situ and Ex-situ Marine Mammal Conservation Efforts in Asia.” The event aims to strengthen regional preparedness and conservation action for marine mammals across Asia as part of the One Health agenda through dialogue, capacity building, and cross-sector partnerships.

The Environmental Management Bureau’s Environmental Research and Laboratory Services Division (EMB-ERLSD) has deployed advanced air quality monitoring equipment at the UP Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM) in Diliman, Quezon City.

The installation is part of a five-year urban air monitoring initiative launched in April 2026. It supports long-term data generation on particulate matter, persistent organic pollutants, gases, volatile organic compounds, and pollutant deposition in an urban environment influenced by vehicular emissions, fuel combustion, and other human activities.

The initiative builds on the partnership between DENR-EMB and UP IESM, formalized through a memorandum of agreement signed in March 2026, and combines EMB-ERLSD’s technical monitoring and laboratory capacity with IESM’s scientific and meteorological expertise.

Data from the monitoring site are expected to support air quality research, pollutant transport and dispersion analysis, and the development of science-based environmental management strategies.
