After enjoying a steaming cup of coffee, people usually discard the spent grounds. But for a researcher from UP College of Fine Arts , this biomaterial became the start of something new.

𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗸, developed by Louise Jastin I. Beron, is a reusable coffee filter made from spent coffee grounds mixed with clay. Featuring carvings inspired by Taal’s kalyado pattern, Latak reflects Beron’s cultural identity and passion for sustainability, combined into one piece.☕

Many of today's greatest inventions weren't born in labs—they came from ordinary people solving everyday problems.

For instance, after Typhoon Yolanda struck Tacloban, communities improvised fiberglass boats. These locally made solutions, later refined by NGOs, saved lives and inspired future disaster-preparedness initiatives.

This shows that research and invention are not exclusive to laboratories; they thrive in everyday life, especially when necessity calls.
