The MLUC Voice strengthened its editorial board selection process for Editorial Year 2026โ€“2027 by introducing a competency-based assessment, requiring applicants to undergo the Ink Test: The Editorial Competency Test and a panel interview on May 18 and 30.

The screening process assessed applicantsโ€™ journalistic competence, editorial knowledge, leadership potential, and readiness to take on responsibilities within the publication.

Following the application process, candidates faced a panel interview where they discussed their experiences, editorial plans, and vision for the MLUC Voice.

The panel was composed of 4 members, Publication-in-Charge, Dr. Maria Evelyn Corpuz; Campus Head for Strategic Communications, Prof. Dannilyn Macato; and former EICs and now MV co-advisers Jericho De Leon and Rogelio Joshua Catbagan III.

According to De Leon, the competency-based screening was introduced to strengthen the publicationโ€™s recruitment process and ensure that future editorial leaders possess both journalistic skills and leadership capacity necessary to uphold the standards of campus press work.

โ€œWhat we wanted to establish through this process is a system that evaluates not only passion for journalism but also preparedness, competence, and leadership potential,โ€ De Leon said, emphasizing the need to identify applicants capable of handling the demands of publication work.

De Leon further shared that the application process was designed to assess both technical competencies and long-term commitment to student journalism.

โ€œWe want to ensure that future editorial leaders can sustain the publicationโ€™s quality of work while continuing to innovate and mentor the next generation of student journalists,โ€ De Leon added.

One applicant, Chen Uyso, Senior Correspondent and aspiring Associate Editor, described the process as an opportunity to reflect on responsibility and continuity within the publication.

โ€œAs an incoming senior, I think we bear a mantle of responsibility to ensure that the past success of the publicationโ€”whether in its operations, coverage of events, discussion of news and issues, or competitive streakโ€”is continued during our time, and that we bring in and hone talent that will ensure this level of excellence isnโ€™t just maintained, but exceeded in the future,โ€

Meanwhile, DJ De Guzman, the former Head of the Graphics Department, sat for the competency-based exam as the sole applicant for the highest position in the student publication.

When asked about his motivation for applying for the Editor-in-Chief post, De Guzman highlighted his lifelong dedication to the craft and his desire to give back to the team.

โ€œHonestly, Iโ€™ve been in the journalism scene since I was in elementary school,โ€ De Guzman said. โ€œIโ€™ve learned a ton along the way, and I want to put that knowledge to good use with the publication.โ€

He also shared his immediate plans for the student publication, highlighting a strong focus on operational efficiency and structural reform.

โ€œFor my plans, Iโ€™m really looking at making our system more organized,โ€ he added. โ€œI want to establish clear, step-by-step processes so everything from brainstorming to publishing runs completely smoothly.โ€

Dr. Corpuz emphasized that the new screening mechanism is just the beginning of a broader organizational shift aimed at elevating the student publication's internal framework.

โ€œActually, the competency assessment is one of the first few steps that we are taking in restructuring the operations and the systems in the publication,โ€ Dr. Corpuz explained. โ€œSince a lot has transpired over the past terms, it is high time to institutionalize these reforms to build a more efficient foundation.โ€

The newly selected editorial board is expected to lead the publicationโ€™s editorial initiatives for Editorial Year 2026โ€“2027 following the completion of the selection process.

JUNE 1 โ€” Enrollment officially commenced today at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State Universityโ€“Mid La Union Campus (DMMMSU-MLUC), marking the start of the Academic Year 2026โ€“2027, which opens on June 15.

Students, parents, and guardians from the College of Information Technology, College of Management, and College of Education arrived early at designated enrollment venues to complete documentary requirements, secure class schedules, and finalize their registration. Campus personnel and student assistants were also deployed to assist enrollees and address concerns throughout the enrollment period.

In an interview, first-year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology enrollee Allona Lyn Mina shared her experience during the opening day of enrollment.

Mas marami pong requirements, kabilang na ang medical examination,โ€ she said.

Mina also noted that navigating the enrollment process could be challenging for incoming freshmen.

Meanwhile, Arlyn Mina, who accompanied her daughter during enrollment, cited the universityโ€™s Free Higher Education program as one of the primary reasons for choosing DMMMSU-MLUC.

Dahil doon, nagdesisyon kaming dito na siya mag-enroll,โ€ she said.

The Student Affairs and Services Office expects more than 2,000 freshmen to enroll this academic year based on the results of the recent admission process. According to Dr. Dodilyn D. Bermudez, campus head for Student Affairs and Services, the projected number of freshmen may be lower than the figures recorded during the previous first-semester enrollment.

โ€œIdeally, 2,800 lang ang available slots for MLUC as we are considering the carrying capacity of the campus.

Despite the projected decrease, the expected enrollment remains one of the largest among the universityโ€™s campuses, reflecting the continued demand for quality and accessible higher education in the city.

Enrollment will continue until July 3 and will accommodate students, including incoming freshmen, continuing students, transferees, returnees, and late enrollees, following the schedules set by the different colleges and institute.

Students from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University โ€“ Mid La Union Campus successfully passed the Philippine National Information Technology Standards (PhilNITS) - Information Technology Passport Examination held on April 26, 2026, at the College of Information Technology Building.

A total of 63 examinees from the College of Information Technology (CIT) of the Mid La Union Campus surpassed the certification examination.

Conducted twice annually every April and October, the PhilNITS examination is spearheaded by the Information Technology Professionals Examination Council (ITPEC), aiming to evaluate the competency, technical knowledge, and professional readiness of aspiring information technology practitioners.

"Ito (PhilNITS) kasi big deal din siya since walang board exam ang IT," Justine Tadifa said, a certification passer, "Maganda siya sa resume and malaking credential na yan for the companies kung magtratrabaho ka na." he continued. He proceeded the interview with gratitude for accomplishing the exam and his relief in achieving another goal in his IT journey.

The achievement of the passers reflects the universityโ€™s commitment to pursue academic distinction and to produce globally competitive IT professionals, bringing pride and recognition to the DMMMSU community.

Eid Al-Adha marks a revered period for the Muslim community, commemorating the supreme act of sacrifice, obedience, and unshakeable faith shown by Prophet Ibrahim. This holy festival stands as a timeless testament to their deep devotion and complete surrender to the will of Allah, reminding every believer that true faith is proven through action, trust, and sincere intentions.

As our Muslim brothers and sisters gather in prayer and reflection, may this sacred day bring serenity to their hearts and barakah to their homes. May Allah also accept their sacrifices, prayers and sincere deeds, granting them peace, forgiveness and everlasting joy.

Chaos always draws a crowdโ€”but only journalists step into it when it stops being safe to do so.

When reports of gunfire emerged inside the Philippine Senate, confusion spread almost immediately. Videos circulated within minutes, followed by speculation, political commentary, and competing narratives trying to outrun verified information. Inside the building, journalists remained in position as the situation unfolded, continuing to report while everything was still unstable and still being pieced together in real time.

What people usually see at the end of that process is orderโ€”clean updates, structured reports, calm voices over live coverage. What they donโ€™t see is how little order exists while those updates are being formed. In moments like these, reporters are not watching events from a safe perimeter. They are inside the same uncertainty everyone else is trying to interpret, except they still have to produce clarity out of it while it is happening.

Fear does not disappear in that space. It simply gets managed quietly, because the work does not pause for it.

The gap between what the public sees and what the process actually looks like is where journalism is most often misunderstood. It is easy to reduce reporting to something passive in an era where everyone has a camera and everyone can publish instantly. But journalism is not defined by the ability to record events. It is defined by the responsibility to verify them, especially when everything around those events is still unstable.

That responsibility slows everything down. It makes journalism look less immediate than online commentary, less reactive than vlogging, less โ€œvisibleโ€ in real time. But that slowness is not a flaw. In fact, that is the entire point.

The incident in the Senate was already under pressure before any reports of gunfire surfaced. A standoff involving Senator Ronald โ€œBatoโ€ dela Rosa under international legal scrutiny, armed presence within a legislative space, and the anticipated arrival of the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte were already converging in one institution. Whether or not these developments are connected, their timing created a dense political environment where meaning forms faster than confirmation can catch up.

In that kind of environment, speculation is almost automatic.

This is where journalism is often judged unfairly. People expect certainty in moments that are still unfolding. Reporting, however, does not begin with certaintyโ€”it ends there. Someone still has to stay close enough to observe what is happening without turning observation into assumption. Someone still has to filter conflicting details while none of them are fully confirmed. Someone still has to decide what is safe and accurate to publish while the situation remains fluid.

These are not abstract responsibilities. They happen under pressure, in real space, with real risk.

What happened in the Senate briefly exposed that process in a way that routine coverage usually hides. The public receives updates as finished products, but the act of producing them is fragmented, cautious, and often physically close to instability. Journalists are not separate from the events they report on; they are inside the same unfolding conditions, trying to translate them into something the public can understand without distortion.

What stays afterward is not a neat conclusion, but an awareness of how fragile information is before it becomes newsโ€”and how easily it could collapse without people willing to stay in that uncertainty long enough to make sense of it. In that space, chasing crowds for attention fades into irrelevance; what remains is the work of holding the line between confusion and clarity while everything else moves faster than understanding can.
