THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BONGAO CHANNEL IN BONGAO ISLAND - MUNICIPALITY OF TAWI-TAWI, BARMM, SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES
By: Rasul M. Sabal & Team Museum
Introduction
Bongao Channel is a marine ecosystem and connecting coastal areas and islands of Bongao in Tawi-Tawi. Its ecological importance comes from the interaction of shallow coastal waters, mangrove - associated environments, seagrass beds, reef communities and ecosystem in nature.
The underwater environment of Bongao describes is a natural furrow - morphological formation and exposed to high velocity level in-and-out current movement from the Sulu Sea that makes constant changing nutrient cycle and oceanographic productivity wherein beneficial to all marine organisms inhabited the channel. Its maximum depth determines ranging from 10ft to 50ft has been recorded with depth meter gauge during the dived conducting underwater photographic documentation for coral reef lifeform survey. Coral reef ecosystem is among the most productive and important biological habitats in the waters of around Tawi-Tawi marine eco-region. The province lies within the Coral Triangle, which supports exceptionally high diversity of corals and Marine fishes.
In and around Bongao Channel, coral communities can provide shelter and feeding grounds for marine fishes and nursery areas for juvenile living creatures for both vertebrates, invertebrates, algae and other forms of marine organisms; and protection of coastlines by reducing the wave energy during roughed conditions. The ecological significance, from 'MARINE BIOLOGY' standpoint, Bongao Channel can therefore be characterized as a multi - habitat tropical coastal ecosystem. Ecologically, significant tropical marine environment within Bongao municipality of Tawi-Tawi Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in Southern Philippines. It forms part of the highly biodiverse marine ecosystem of the Sulu Archipelago and the Coral Triangle. The channel and its adjacent coastal water support a variety of interconnected marine habitats, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove forest and macro-algae communities.
Further, the Bongao Channel and Manalik Channel were discovered since 2012 the diversity of marine creatures when marine biological collection and research team (MBCRT) have been started to collect marine invertebrates and conducted underwater photographic documentation of lifeform corals for the Mindanao State University Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography Marine Science Museum exhibition. Combining the two channels one of the largest 'Marine Laboratory' for collecting the specimens that represents the different phyla in the "Animal Kingdom" such as phylum Molluska, Cnidaria. Porifera, Echinodermata, Arthropoda, Vertebrata, Brachiopoda and Platyhelminthes. Some specimens collected has been identified as uncommon status, rare species and others were listed in the Red List of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Naturally, the biological importance of Bongao Channel lies not only in the individual habitats but also in thier ecological connectivity. Mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs and channel waters function as an interconnected system through which the movement of larval dispersal, nutrients and organic matter. Consequently, conservation and sustainable management of these habitats are essential for maintaining marine biodiversity and the ecological health of Bongao Channel.
