University of Antique, NC A&T Forge Global Alliance

Strengthening its footprint in the international academic landscape, the University of Antique (UA) officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) during a formal signing ceremony held at the Busalian Hall on April 7, 2026.

This milestone marks a deepened commitment to global engagement and academic synergy, designed to open new doors for students and faculty alike. The partnership aims to equip the next generation of leaders with the cross-cultural competencies necessary to drive sustainable growth and contribute meaningfully to global development.

The ceremony was attended by UA’s top management, led by Dr. Jelyn O. Alentajan, Officer-in-Charge President and VP for Research, Extension, and Innovation; Dr. Pablo S. Crespo Jr., OIC Vice President for Administration and Finance; and Dr. Catherine C. Viesca, Vice President for Academic Affairs. Representing the North Carolina-based institution were Dr. Kimberly Tyson, Director of the Office of International Affairs, and Dr. Gerard Dumancas, Associate Dean of Research and Program Innovation of the Honors College.

The formalization of this bond comes on the heels of a successful digital precursor. The two institutions previously launched a Virtual Global Student Exchange Program in collaboration with NC A&T’s College of Education and Honors College. That initiative saw nearly 100 students from the Philippines and the United States engage in a virtual cultural exchange, sharing insights into their respective cuisines, research, and lifestyles.

By solidifying this partnership, UA continues to expand its international network, fostering collaborative ties that bridge the gap between academic institutions, government agencies, and private industries on a global scale.

CONNECTING MARITIME COMMUNITIES VIA CHIT CHAT: BUILDING BRIDGES ONE STORY AT A TIME

Paving the way for a new era of digital diplomacy, students from the University of Antique (UA) took center stage in the international virtual event, “Uniting Maritime Communities Through ChitChat: Bridging Barriers, One Story at a Time,” held on April 7, 2026.

The event, organized in collaboration with the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), the College of the Marshall Islands (CMI), supported by Erasmus+, sought to dissolve geographical boundaries through the power of informal dialogue and shared narratives.

While the forum featured educators and maritime advocates, the spotlight remained firmly on the student participants. Representing the University of Antique, students engaged in real-time cultural exchanges with their counterparts from Davao and the Marshall Islands.

By sharing local perspectives on maritime traditions and contemporary challenges, UA students acted as vital links in a chain of international solidarity. The "ChitChat" format allowed participants to bypass traditional formal constraints, fostering a space where genuine understanding could flourish.

The primary objective of the initiative was to create an interactive platform focused on active listening and the exchange of ideas.

The success of the event underscores UA's commitment to providing its students with global exposure and cross-cultural competencies. By the conclusion of the forum, the "bridges" built through conversation transformed a vast oceanic distance into a closely-knit community of future maritime leaders.

As the maritime industry becomes increasingly interconnected, the University of Antique continues to champion initiatives that prepare its students not just for the technicalities of the sea, but for the essential human connections that drive global progress.

Initiated by Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U), this virtual event served as a high-level platform for UA to present its homegrown innovations alongside a prestigious network of local and international partners.

In collaboration with the Metro Iloilo Water District and the Western Visayas Council of International Relations Officers (WVCIRO), the university highlighted how its specialized campuses are addressing the most critical challenges in water management and food security.

Dr. Garner Algo Alolod (Director for Research, Extension, and Innovation, UA-TLMC)

Topic: "Sustaining Waters, Sustaining Fisheries: A Path to Food Security and Environmental Balance."

Dr. Rosanni Labnao (Director for Research, Extension, and Innovation, UA Hamtic Campus)

Topic: "Planning for Resilience: UA-LGU Joint Initiatives for Water Stewardship and Disaster Preparedness."

UA stood prominently among an extensive list of presenting institutions, including:

By championing these initiatives on an international stage, the University of Antique reinforces its role as a leader in Internationalization and Sustainable Development. These efforts ensure that the research conducted within the Hamtic and TLMC campuses contributes significantly to the global effort of protecting and sustaining one of our most vital resources, water.
