Proud moment for ! 👏 Our YouthMappers taught students how to read satellite imagery and trace buildings and roads. Like ❤️ and share 🔁 to spread the word about open mapping!

On January 28, 2026, the YouthMappers of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) opened the doors of a computer laboratory to students who wanted to learn how maps are made.

The session began with a short introduction to open mapping and why accurate maps matter to communities. Many participants had never used mapping tools before, so the YouthMappers members started with simple steps. They showed how to open the platform, read satellite imagery and trace buildings and roads.

As the students settled in front of the computers, the room grew lively. Some looked nervous at first, but the members did not rush them. One member leaned over a monitor to point out details on the screen, and the students around him followed along with smiles and growing confidence. Others in the room helped their seatmates, showing that learning quickly became a shared effort.

What made the event meaningful was the spirit behind it. The YouthMappers were not paid to teach, and they did not gain anything except the joy of seeing others grow. They gave their time, patience and skills so that other students could understand something new. This is what makes teaching a noble act. It passes knowledge on without expecting anything back, and it helps others become independent.

By the end of the session, the participants could contribute to a real map that may one day help their communities prepare for disasters and plan for the future.
