𝗦𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 | 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗮 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

On August 27, 2026, the Department of Natural Sciences held an extension activity under the SAVE (Sustainable Action Through Value-Added Eco-Upcycling) Project with our partner community, Barangay 43-B, Quarry District, Tacloban City, as part of the university’s Foundation Anniversary Extravaganza.

𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝟭: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀: 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗰𝗼-𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁
We opened with the plastic problem in the barangay. Most of the waste here is sachets, plastic bags, and disposable packaging, which clog drainage canals and cause flooding, and the stagnant water left behind breeds mosquitoes. Participants then sorted household items by plastic type (PET, HDPE, LDPE, and PP) to see which ones can be reused or upcycled.

𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝟮: 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗰𝗼-𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀
The second session covered eco-design: turning waste into things the community can use, making products that are functional, durable, safe, and good-looking, working with local materials, and keeping designs suited to the community and its culture.

Thank you to the residents of Barangay 43-B who came, including the kids who tagged along with their parents, and to our BS Environmental Science students and interns who facilitated the sessions.

𝘾𝘼𝙍𝙄𝙂𝘼𝙍𝘼, 𝙇𝙀𝙔𝙏𝙀— Strengthening its commitment to environmental stewardship and campus sustainability, the Department of Natural Sciences of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) - Main Campus conducted an Orientation on Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) today, May 12, 2026, at the EVSU-Carigara Campus Audio-Visual Room.

The initiative focused on establishing a systematic approach to managing and quantifying the types of waste generated within the university ecosystem. The orientation drew a diverse group of participants, including faculty members handling laboratory courses, campus maintenance personnel, and students.

The event was spearheaded by the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬, 𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐌𝐚. 𝐄𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐚 𝐀. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐣𝐚, 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 (𝐏𝐂𝐎). 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐣𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦—𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐬. 𝐋𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐃. 𝐏𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐨, 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫; 𝐌𝐬. 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐞; 𝐌𝐬. 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐁. 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐳𝐚; 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐬. 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐑. 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐚, 𝐏𝐂𝐎 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟—provided technical insights into the WACS methodology, a vital prerequisite for developing an effective Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) plan.

A significant portion of the orientation addressed the unique requirements of laboratory-based courses, where faculty engaged in discussions regarding the proper segregation and characterization of hazardous versus non-hazardous waste. This ensures that campus laboratory protocols align strictly with national environmental standards. Simultaneously, maintenance staff received practical guidelines on waste sorting at the source and the importance of accurate data collection in characterizing daily campus discards.

This orientation serves as a foundational step toward a "Green" EVSU and the university's broader goal of becoming a National University for Climate Action (NURCA). By fostering a culture of accountability among educators, students, and support staff, the university continues to pave the way for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

‎𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞: The BCC Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) Symposium Series continued this afternoon with a seminar on Republic Act No. 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, held at the Chemistry Laboratory.

‎The seminar aimed to promote environmental awareness by educating participants on proper waste disposal, waste reduction, and the importance of maintaining cleanliness in the community.
‎
‎The activity formally opened with an inspirational message from Dr. Jett C. Quebec, BCC College Administrator, who emphasized the significance of environmental responsibility and community participation in sustainable waste management practices.
‎
‎The discussions were facilitated by resource speakers Katherine Joy D. Caimbre, MSC; Lilibeth Peliño, MSC; Lorna May Parado; Joezenon A. Purog, PhD; and Clarizza Luz Mercado. They discussed the key provisions of Republic Act No. 9003 and encouraged participants to apply proper solid waste management practices in their daily lives.

‎To conclude the activity, tokens of appreciation were presented to the speakers by OSAS Director Mr. John Eric Go in recognition of their contributions to the success of the seminar.

EVSU strengthens its sustainability drive through system-wide WACS orientations, equipping students, faculty, and staff with essential knowledge on waste analysis and ecological solid waste management. This initiative promotes environmental compliance, standardizes waste assessment practices, and promotes a stronger culture of sustainability and shared responsibility across all campuses.

The Pollution Control Office, in collaboration with the EVSU-Department of Natural Sciences, successfully conducted a series of orientations on the Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS), beginning at EVSU Tanauan followed by sessions at EVSU Burauen and EVSU Dulag on April 29.

This initiative highlights the university’s continued commitment to promoting sustainable waste management practices and strengthening environmental awareness across the EVSU community. 🌱♻️
