CONGRATULATIONS, SIR AMADO BABON! 🎬🎭

The LNU Supreme Student Council and the whole student body proudly congratulate Sir Amado Arjhay Babon, an esteemed LNU alumnus and member of the LNU Sirang Theater Ensemble, for his nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 49th Gawad Urian Awards for his remarkable performance in Lav Diaz’s Magellan!

From Sirang to the world of Philippine cinema, Sir Amado continues to show how the discipline, passion, and artistry nurtured through theater can reach even greater heights.

In Magellan, Lav Diaz revisits the story of Ferdinand Magellan and the complex history surrounding the Spanish expedition and its encounter with the Philippines. Sir Amado portrays Enrique, the slave-interpreter who becomes an important figure in the film’s retelling of this chapter of history.

Being named among the nominees of the Gawad Urian, one of the country’s most distinguished film awards organized by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, is a remarkable recognition of his craft and contribution to Philippine cinema.

Isinagawa ng Leyte Normal University (LNU), sa pamamagitan ng Sentro ng Wika at Kultura, ang Pambansang Webinar sa Tertulyang Pangwika at Writeshop noong ika-26 ng Agosto 2026 na may temang “Mula sa Salinlahi Hanggang AI: Bilang Kasangkapan sa Pananaliksik, Pagtataya, at Pagtuturo.”

Binigyang-diin sa gawain ang makabuluhan, responsable, at etikal na paggamit ng Artificial Intelligence (AI) bilang katuwang sa pagbuo ng mga ideya sa pananaliksik, pagsusuri ng datos, paghahanda ng mga kagamitang pampagtuturo, pagbuo ng mga instrumento, at pagdidisenyo ng makabuluhang pagtataya. Binigyang-linaw rin na hindi dapat maging kapalit ang teknolohiya ng kritikal na pag-iisip, pagkamalikhain, integridad, at pananagutan ng mga g**o, mag-aaral, at mananaliksik, kundi isang kasangkapang makatutulong sa higit na pagpapahusay ng gawaing akademiko.

Tampok sa webinar ang mga dalubhasang tagapagsalita na sina Dr. Joel B. Lopez, na nagtalakay ng “Baybayin: Mula Salinlahi Hanggang AI”; Dr. Las Johansen B. Caluza, para sa paksang “Filipino Bilang Wika ng Pananaliksik at Paglikha ng Kaalaman”; Dr. Orlando P. Vinculado Jr., na nagbahagi hinggil sa “AI sa Pagtataya: Pagsusulit, TOS, at mga Kagamitang Pampagtuturo”; at Bb. Louvesa Idda Galban, na tumalakay sa “AI bilang Kasangkapan sa Pagpapahusay ng Pagtuturo at Pagkatuto.”

Dinaluhan ang nasabing gawain ng mga dalubhasa, g**o, mananaliksik, at mag-aaral mula sa iba’t ibang institusyon na nagkakaisa sa pagsusulong at pagpapahalaga sa wikang Filipino, pananaliksik, at makabagong pamamaraan ng pagtuturo at pagkatuto.

Sa kabuuan, naging mahalagang lunsaran ang webinar at writeshop sa pagsasanib ng tradisyonal na kaalaman, wikang Filipino, at makabagong teknolohiya, lalo na ng AI, tungo sa higit na inobatibo, makabuluhan, etikal, at responsableng pananaliksik, pagtataya, at pagtuturo.

When global crises disrupt the landscape of entrepreneurship, followed by uncertainties, small business owners do not just adapt—they redefine survival.

Driven by a desire to understand these realities, particularly those of food online sellers, Ms. Jeza F. Terado of the College of Management and Entrepreneurship examined the lived experiences, challenges, and adaptive strategies of food online sellers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in her study, 'The Verge of Food Online Sellers During the COVID-19 Pandemic'.

Co-authored with Dr. Rene Osorno of the University of Cebu–Main Campus, the findings provide actionable perspectives for policymakers, educators, and aspiring business leaders seeking to foster resilient, sustainable small business ecosystems. It also advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (No Poverty), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

By grounding academic inquiry in real-world challenges, this study reminds us that meaningful research goes beyond publication; it serves the community by providing vital insight for sustaining livelihoods.

LNU BSIT Students Turn Sudden Rain Showers into an Opportunity for Innovation

As the “-ber” months begin, Filipinos welcome the early Christmas season while continuing to navigate the country’s unpredictable rainy weather. For three BSIT students of Leyte Normal University (LNU), these familiar conditions inspired an innovation that could make an everyday household task easier.

Charles Edvir D. Rosete, Junar P. Alvarez, and Cliff Emmanuel C. Ramos, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) students of LNU, developed the Automated Rain Detector System, a utility model under embedded systems and smart home technology designed to improve the clothes-drying process.

The idea came from a common household problem. Families who dry clothes on terraces or other outdoor spaces can easily be caught off guard by sudden rain, leaving clothes soaked or forcing someone to rush outside to save the laundry.

The students’ invention offers an automated solution. It integrates a water detector module, microcontroller, DC motors, reel system, and waterproof cover into one unit. Once rain is detected, the system automatically unrolls a protective cover over the clothes and retracts it when the rain stops—eliminating the need for manual intervention.

What started as an everyday problem became an opportunity for the students to apply their knowledge and develop a practical technological solution.

Beyond developing the system, however, the students faced another challenge: navigating the patent application process while keeping up with their academic responsibilities.

Responding to the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) formality examination reports required attention to strict deadlines, while thesis work, examinations, and other school requirements continued.

As the students shared:
“The biggest challenge wasn't the invention itself—it was balancing academics with the demands of the patent process.”

There were even nights when they had to choose between school requirements and patent revisions. With the guidance of their adviser, Engr. Dennis Tibe, the process became more manageable as he helped them understand the examination reports and pace their revisions alongside their academic work.

For the three student innovators, the experience taught them that innovation requires more than a good idea—it also demands perseverance, patience, and the courage to keep improving.

Their message to fellow Normalista is simple:
“Take the leap on your ideas, even if you're not sure where they'll lead.”
They learned that every innovation begins with the willingness to try, fail, revise, and try again.

“Every innovation starts with someone willing to try, fail, revise, and try again.”

More than the invention itself, the experience has shaped the students for their future careers.

“More than the recognition, this experience shaped us for our future careers. It taught us that innovation, research, and perseverance go hand in hand, and it's a skill that will follow us wherever we go, in any path we choose.”

The Automated Rain Detector System is currently at the initial stage of the patent process, with the student inventors continuing to work on the necessary requirements and revisions toward intellectual property protection.

And this is only the beginning.

As LNU continues to foster a culture of research and innovation, more inventions and student innovations will be featured in the coming weeks, highlighting the creativity, ingenuity, and perseverance of Normalistas who continue.
